Art Deco-Inspired 30 East 29th Street Gets Ready To Rise In NoMad

There’s a new skyscraper to look forward to in NoMad, Manhattan. Permits have been approved for the construction of the Rockefeller Group’s 639-foot-tall building at 30 East 29th Street. This news comes nearly four months after YIMBY obtained the building’s early renderings, with design by CetraRuddy.

The 46-story building will yield 226,350 square feet, with 167,700 square feet dedicated to residential use. The highest floors will rises 599 feet above ground, dedicated to mechanical use.

123 residences will be created, indicating condominiums. Three duplexes will occupy floors 40-43, and each will have more than one terrace. Other units will range from studio size, up to four-bedrooms.

The main entrance features eight deep brown terracotta columns. Chevrons are common across the entire building, rising from the bottom to the top. The building uses Art Deco styling for a unique, minimalist design.

With demolition finished, construction can start as soon as the crews arrive on site. The estimated completion date has yet to be announced.

Like all these setback towers, common sense. basic design understanding and plain good taste tells you the bizarre short sections that actually meet the streetwall should be 3-4 times as tall to look sensible and appealing, yet this cities' ridiculous DOB sky/plane rules prevent that. REFORM THE CODE NOW DAMMIT!

9 construction workers hospitalized after carbon monoxide leak

The hardhats were working at 30 East 29th St. when one of them began feeling “ill” around 4:30 p.m., according to FDNY Chief of Special Operations John Esposito.

Firefighters and paramedics arrived on the scene minutes later and found several others who felt “dizzy and nauseous,” Esposito said.

Four workers wound up being hospitalized in serious condition and five were treated for minor injuries.

Investigators believe gasoline-powered generators — which were running in a small, “confined” space — are ultimately to blame. Of the nine workers who got exposed, two of them had to be lifted up “on rope” in a high-angle rescue, according to Esposito.

Rockefeller Center developer reveals first NYC residential tower in Nomad

Formed over 90 years ago to develop and build Rockefeller Center, developer Rockefeller Group has never built a residential tower in its New York City hometown–until now. Their new condominium tower, Rose Hill has just been unveiled along with the launch of the building’s teaser site. The 600-foot tower is currently under construction at 30 East 29th Street. The building will be designed by CetraRuddy; first looks show an Art Deco-inspired facade that does not diverge heavily from the architectural style of Rockefeller Center.

I'm curious to see just how Art Deco this building looks without the help of those swanky renderings. Seems to fall squarely in the mid-tier of current condo design, with only a token nod to decoration. Boxy, uneven balcony placement, trendy horizontal i-beam inserts, minimal and context-less brickwork. Maybe I'll be wrong.

edit - I do like that crown, though.

That rendering as presented is sort of light on the details, unless you squint a little maybe.

But one of the more detailed renderings tells me this one will be pleasing to the eye.
