Downtown Columbus Indiana

Here are some pictures of Downtown Columbus, Indiana. The city has a population of about 45,000 and is well know for its architecture, art and public space design. It is also home to Cummins Engine Company (Fortune 500).

"The President and member of the founding family of Cummins, J Irwin Miller established the Cummins Foundation and in 1957 made an offer to Columbus that the foundation would pay all the architects fees for new public buildings in Columbus. Thus this small Midwestern city has buildings by Eero Saarinen, Eliel Saarinen, I.M. Pei, Kevin Roche, Richard Meier, Harry Weese, César Pelli, Gunnar Birkerts, and Skidmore, Owings & Merrill, many of which feature extensive interiors designed by Alexander Girard." (wikipedia)

Today, Columbus, the Cummins Foundation and Miller family continue to invest in the unique environment and placemaking of the City. One of the newest efforts include Exhibit Columbus 2017 which is a new international art/sculpture exhibit. The initial Exhibit Columbus will be followed by another symposium and exhibition in 2018 and 2019.

NOTE: I took these pictures on a cold winter day during the Thanksgiving holiday week so a lot of people were off work. I also try not to have people in my photos. Downtown is usually a very busy place and when the weather is nice there are a lot of outdoor cafes etc.
