Regarding future contests:

Looking at the past few photo contest threads I see that there isn't much exposure to this. Is there a way to have the contest more "official" and maybe stick it up at the top so people will see it and maybe more will actually cast their vote, and it will also atract more new participants.

Nice idea Sacto. And do we have a SkyscraperPage flicr group? We should have someone create one and could post a link to the contest there. Hell, we could get a ton of traffic from that.

This isn't official?

I felt the last few contests have done pretty well from an entry and voting standpoint. Paper didn't get many views in the entry week, but we still got 8 entries on a bit more difficult subject.

Stickying the current thread isn't going to do much as the current photo contest doesn't drop to lower than about the tenth thread in General Photography very often and I think one of the regulars piping in with questions and comments on the current round does more for exposure than stickying the thread. Despite the quality of the 'Random Photos' thread and the quality of the entries in the photo contests, General Photography isn't the most heavily traveled area of the forums here (wow, there's some understatement), and the contests don't really fit anywhere else. dvstampa's idea of linking outside of skyscraperpage makes sense to generate more interest. I've added the current contest link to my signature to get the GP area a bit more exposure inside of skyscraperpage, but I'm only one forumer and I don't participate regularly in a couple of key forum areas (construction and most of the US section). And does anyone read anything in anyone's signature?

Since contest number 42 (ten rounds), here's some statistics:

Round Participants
MIN: 4 MAX: 16 AVG: 11.4

Round Voting
MIN: 40 MAX: 56 AVG: 49.4

Miscellaneous
Total participants (entry not voting): 50
Total multiple-round participants: 26

So then, should I go ahead and create a Flickr group? SSC has one.

I think it's a good idea, but not because SSC has one. I don't use Flickr personally anymore (free bandwidth limitations), but I'm also not the person to look to for social networking as I seem to go out of my way to avoid it.

I guess the only concern would be too many entries could make it difficult to sort out winners. We did have one contest that ran a second round of voting and I think it was agreed that it lost a bit of steam at that point. But we'll cross that bridge when -- and if -- we get to it.

Maybe the moderators can change the name of the subforum to 'General Photo & Photo Contests' or something of that nature -- that may get more people already in the forum more interested.

If an overflow of pics entries is a problem then there should be a certain limitation (like a maximum of 15 entries per contest) and be at a first come first served basis.

It's not really too many entries, but too many entries for the number of votes. With only 50 voters a week 20 entries isn't a good sample set.

I keep forgetting about this section because it's no longer linked at the top of city photos.

That's only something an adminstrator or the webmaster can do.

I think it would be a good idea to split your idea and have two areas: Gen Photos and "Weekly" Photo Contest!!! I find myself looking at most of the Gen Photo threads once, and the Photo Contests I keep checking in on to see how people are voting and what their saying...

The Photo Contest is the main reason I come into the General Photo fourm!!!

I'll stick this thread, but changing the subforum name isn't likely in the cards.
