That garage would be illegal with any other site, but some idiot NIMBY councilperson preserved the garage when the tower was built maybe a decade ago.

The issue was that there was a city-owned garage on the site, and the moron said that selling the site to a private developer would be a terrible thing, because the city would lose control over scarce parking spaces. So, when the city sold the site, they put a stipuation that the new tower had to replace the existing parking garage Outdated 50's style thinking from an 80-year old councilperson.

And, to make matters worse, then didn't require an underground garage like everywhere else, so you get that eyesore. Hopefully the garage will one day be converted to loft apartments or office space or something.

There's a reason that NYC doesn't allow those surface garage bases. They look like hell, and ruin the streetscape.

Great update as usual. It's tough to see the glass on this building when you go up there, but from what you photographed it looks good so far.

Very excited to see more of the cladding - watching this building rise is like entering a time warp into the 60's box era.

Yeah. Based on what I'm seeing I think this will be a very respectful, classy tower.

Carlos, that little small tower next door will be 150 feet taller than 250 W. 55th.

Nice photos though, glad to see this one moving quickly!

Queens has different zoning code than Manhattan. And the underground garages aren't allowed in all of LIC, but yes, they are allowed on the Queens West site.

When Queens West was zoned, they allowed the aboveground garages because of the water table along the riverfront. Developers said it was too expensive to put the garages underground.

Full update:

The glass looks great, and new steel continues to go up... only now is this building's presence beginning to be felt and it still has ~20 floors to go. It will make quite an impact on 8th Avenue once complete, I think.

^ Thanks for keeping the promise of taking pics of the glass.

I don't hate the cladding, but it definitely doesn't look like the renders. I can tell that much so far.

Today! Not as impressed with the cladding as I see more... reserving judgement until we have more up, though.
