MANCHESTER: A bit of regeneration

I was in Manchester for a couple of days, and had just enough spare time to take some shots of the impeccably maintained Victorian centre, and the area of New Islington, about half a mile to the east.

In New Islington the regeneration work is less advanced – the place is a strange mix of yuppie flats, converted factories, wasteland and tower blocks, dotted around with canals and terraced streets.

I like what they’ve done so far though. The unashamedly PoMo buildings of Will Alsop and FAT (Fashion Architecture Taste) make a colourful contrast to Manchester’s Tupperware skies.

How can one city produce both Anthony Burgess and Toni Wilson? Not to mention 24 Hour Party People, the second best pop music film ever after Hard Day's Night?

Manchester...city of dreams. Does the sun ever shine there? Could Ian Curtis have ever come from anywhere else?

You covered a lot of ground in 2 days! Very interesting to see the new emerging among the old. Great photos.

The Ancoats area seems to be coming along nicely. Not been to Manchester since 2001 so quite a lot of re-generation since then.

Thanks everyone

Sekkle - I would certainly like to see your take on Manchester.

Yes, that's a good comparison - I guess (though Manchester's canals are smaller) the combination of water and Victorian buildings makes them very similar.

I loved England when I was there but so many of the city seems so dirty for some reason. I dont know if it was just all the grunge on the buildings left over from the industrial revolution or the grey skys, but that didnt really matter. Theres so much amazing history, I could just walk around for years and be amazed. It is an awesome place for sure, never did make it up to Manchester though, maybe someday.
