List of airports and total gate numbers!

I have looked many times with no luck for a master list of the World's largest airports, and how many gates each one has. Anyone know of such a list? Thanks!

I'm not sure if this is what you want, but here is the list of world's bussiest airports by passenger traffic
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%2...senger_traffic

and by aircraft movements

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World%2...ffic_movements

If you go to the article of each airport, you will find further information, that could include the number of gates, for example for Atlanta

Quote:
Concourse T – 14 gates (T1–T5, T7–T15)
Concourse A – 29 gates (A1-A7, A9-A12, A15-A21, A24–A34)
Concourse B – 32 gates (B1–B7, B9-B14, B16-B29, B31-B34, B36)
Concourse C – 48 gates (C1–C22, C30–C53, C55, C57)
Concourse D – 43 gates (D1, D1A, D2–D8, D8A, D9–D11, D11A, D12–D16, D21–D42, D44, D46)
Concourse E – 28 gates (E1–E12, E14–E18, E26–E36)
Concourse F – 12 gates (F1–F10, F12, F14)

Never seen such a thing, but I agree it would be interesting. Maybe it's time for a little original research.

CCs77 has the right idea.

Yes he does! That is close, but I was hoping that there was just a 1-50 rankings list with the total gate count for the top 50 (or however many) airports! I will dig through the link though. Appreciate it!

I doubt any airport has more gates than ATL's 206. A few of US airports are probably above 150 though.

^ I believe that is correct.

A good comparison to ATL is ORD (2nd busiest in the United States by the metrics); it has a total of 182 gates across nine concourses and four terminals.

It's hard to pin down an exact number, but from what I can tell SFO has 102 gates.

I came up with 108. Did you count the a/b gates as separate?

Atlanta is a giant. Is there a reason for it having the world's busiest airport? I know Atlanta is a center for many Fortune 500 companies, but what makes Hartsfield-Jackson the way it is?

Why is Atlanta so big? I would posit these explanations:
  • Atlanta is the main hub for one of the biggest airlines (maybe the absolute biggest).
  • Atlanta is the only city in its region in its size class, so there is no competition.
  • Most cities larger than Atlanta have multiple airports.
  • American cities typically have higher passenger volumes than otherwise comparable other first world cities, because we have such a poor rail network (except in the northeast).

Sydney: 59 + remote stands / non-aerobridge
Melbourne: 47 + remote stands / non-aerobridge
Brisbane: 34 + remote stands / non-aerobridge

Australian airports are quite low because turbo-prop/regional jets are generally remote stands and there's not that much flying of them (excluding Brisbane) - frequency and capacity are required on the big trunk routes (50% of Melbourne-Sydney-Melbourne is widebody aircraft), not just frequency.

The Wayne County Airport Authority says that Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW) has 145 "in-service" gates, but says the McNamara Terminal has 121 and the North Terminal has 26, which means two of them are out of operation or something. Anyway, roughly 145 gates.

You know, I'd never really thought of that. And, now that I'm thinking of it - and not just in terms of Atlanta - it's got me thinking about a situation, locally. Detroit has Detroit Metro (passenger) and then just a few miles west down the road it has Willow Run (cargo). How many other metro areas have a split like this with such clearly seperated airport usages for large airports?

If wikipedia is to be believed and my math is correct, MIA has 125

edit: This link says 123 common use gates. http://www.miami-airport.com/about_us.asp, but they're still rebuilding parts of the airport, so I'm sure it's in flux. Looking at a total of 130 when done.

Quote:
Terminal: Extending from MIA's Central terminal, the South and North Terminals have added over 4 million square feet to MIA's existing 3.5 million square feet of space. The new South Terminal is now open and adds 1.7 million square feet to MIA. The North Terminal encompasses more than 3.8 million square feet and its phased completion is scheduled in 2013. The North, Central and South Terminals will have a total of 130 gates, with 106 international capable gates and 24 domestic gates. The Terminal will have 618 ticket counters and currently has 121 self-service check-in devices.
