The new Harrison PATH train should increase ridership even more. It will be a beauty and should spawn more TODs.

Looks like PATH will hit an all-time record ridership this year. Not sincethe H&M days in the turn of the century, anyway.

Why NJ Transit and not MTA? PATH already shares a fare payment system with Metrocard. It would be perfect time for integration with NYC subways. Nearly have the stations are in NYC.

There was a wacky citizen-initiated proposal a few years back when the WTC was being rebuilt to extend the 6 line to WTC and have it continue on the Newark-bound PATH tracks. PA officials didn't want to hear it, but MTA at least listened.

http://www.yimbynews.com/2014/09/the...never-was.html

Quote:
As planning for the redevelopment of lower Manhattan proceeded in the politically charged years following 9/11, a group of transit planners put forward an ingenious alternative: rather than terminate PATH trains at the World Trade Center, the Port Authority and MTA could work together to extend the tracks another 3,000 feet to the east and connect with the 6 train at Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall.

The benefits of this connection, called PATH-Lex by its boosters, would have been enormous: a one-seat ride from Newark and Jersey City through lower Manhattan and up the East Side and then on to the Bronx. This could have essentially been the first direct cross-Hudson rail link with Grand Central Station, and would have involved minimal new tunneling. But the idea was dismissed before it could gather momentum.

SSP BREAKING NEWS

Port Authority votes to include a South Newark PATH station in their capital budget along with the extension to Newark Liberty International Airport. Newark Officials plan turning former public housing lands into "PATH Station Village."

Former Newark Seth Boyden Housing Project Complex to Become PATH Station Village

A vote early this morning by Port Authority Officials to add an extension to its rail lines that will include the former Newark Seth Boyden Housing Projects Complex had been approved.

This is a message from Newark's Mayor:

“I applaud the vote by the Port Authority Board this morning to include funding for extending the PATH rail-line from Newark Penn Station to Newark Liberty Airport and Newark’s South Ward.

This project will reinforce Newark Airport's potential as a major source of jobs for Newark and Elizabeth residents.

It will benefit airport users by providing a one seat connection to lower Manhattan for the first time as well as more frequent service from the airport to midtown Manhattan.

“Just as important, it will give a major economic boost to an underdeveloped area of Newark. One element of the extension is building a new PATH station on Frelinghuysen Avenue near its intersection with Haynes Avenue.

2016 should be an all time record for PATH. *Cue media reports* I wonder how the old H&M lines carried more.

Continued development along the PATH line will force service upgrades and infrastructure improvements, and maybe even another trans-Hudson tube serving Jersey City, one day.

PATH will never go to SI, but there's a decent chance that Hudson Bergen light rail eventually goes there.

The rebuilt Bayonne Bridge was designed to accommodate light rail, the system can only expand south to SI, and the states have been talking for years now.

If PATH ever goes beyond Newark Airport, I assume it would go towards Plainfield, as intended back in the 1970's.

SI might get a LRT line along the North & West Shores and a BRT along the SI Expressway... The New Goethals Bridge will have a bus lane...

The Airport route puts it past the Raritan Valley line so it would not go to Plainfield. I would like to see the Newark Light Rail Extension to Elizabeth & Cranford / Plainfield pushed...its cheaper and would connect the exploding Downtown Newark redevelopment boom to the Airport , Jersey Gardens , Elizabethport , Midtown Elizabeth and Cranford. I would like to see the proposed SI Busway end at the Midtown Elizabeth station which will be rebuilt soon.

Isn't that like a $2 billion for an estimated 6000 riders a day? How is that good news?

I don't think this means there will be a second South Newark station. I interpreted this to mean that the Airport station already planned will be near Haynes and Frelinghuysen, and that the Transit Village is planned in that same vicinity.

The intersection of Frelinghuysen and Haynes is only 800 feet away from where the current Newark Airport NJTransit station is located. So it wouldn't make sense to build two stations 800 feet apart.

It's actually $1 billion in PA funding, plus $700 million in private investment. Presumably the $1 billion is the true cost of the extension, and the $700M is for a giant park-and-ride, hotel, and other transit village development.

$1 billion is still not great for 6,000 riders, but not as horrible as the full $1.7B price tag makes it seem. On the bright side, it makes it more feasible to think about an infill station at South St in Newark, as well as an extension down to Elizabeth. Both such extensions would generate lots of ridership and development if they were ever to happen.

Still, the price tag is exorbitant, especially when capacity and service improvements that would make the PATH so much better for its daily riders would cost a fraction of this. For instance, the capital plan includes money to buy new cars so that PATH can increase rush hour frequency/capacity by 20%, to the tune of only $148 million.
