I could spend hours scrutinizing the Shanghai pics provided by Muppet. I was enthralled when I visited in 2012...I could see the old being torn down at a rate unparalleled anywhere else. Lamentable, but then, it must be said that most of these areas were wretched places from our vantage points. Perhaps not so, from the point of view of the residents.

To help you compare the views, I'm identifying Hamarikyu Gardens with a red square in the three views.

I like the old view of Tokyo better. Japanese modern cities are some of the most horrifyingly boring places architecturally on the planet.

Same thing is happening in Beijing, its old Hutongs are getting endlessly flattened. I hated seeing that happen when I briefly lived there in 2007. I have been told that the pace of destruction is not slowing, although supposedly Beijing has something like 30-40% of its old Hutongs protected in historic districts, but I dont know how well they are protected, if at all. China right now and for the past couple of decades has been acting like America during the mid 1900's with completely destroying their cities amazing urban fabric.

New Brisavoine, please go back and include source links with those photos you posted. They need to be the links that take you to the website they came from.

That goes for everyone else, too.

Would love to see a 2017 version of that photo, the change is even more pronounced now. Austin has probably changed more skyline wise than any other major American city.

This is an old postcard showing the 400 Motel.

Google Streetview of that same view. The 400 Motel in the photo above is gone now. It was located just north of the white house.

This is a photo I took in March from the 4th floor balcony of the CityView Apartments. The building I was standing on was torn down in April. The property owner is replacing that building with a 4-story office building.

This is a link to an article about what's replacing the apartments, including an aerial drone photo of them being demolished.

This photo was taken in 1970 at the southwest corner of West Cesar Chavez & Congress Avenue, looking north.

Austin was a rather ugly city up until the past 20 years or so. Now it's one of my favs.

Cool. I've seen that top view many times, but was never able to place it in modern-day Tokyo.

Based on this map of Edo in the 1850s, I guess that would've been considered as being kind of on the outskirts of the city at the time?

(Note that west is oriented to the top of the map here)

I mean, if you're the kind of person who doesn't like anything built after 1945 it might not be for you, but modern Japanese cities are anything but visually dull, between the vibrancy of the neon & night lighting; the quality of the streetscaping; and the architecture - which unlike the gimmicky attention-seeking architecture of China or Dubai, is refined, subtle, inventive, and well-built.

I know it's not the trendiest style around right now, but Japanese cities are also probably the world's best showcase of 1960s-80s architecture (without the anti-urban built form that plagued those styles in so much of the rest of the world).

^^^ Yeah, Tokyo is the biggest example of good urban form in the post war era. Makes you feel like you're in a futuristic cityscape.

All of these Chicago ones could benefit from another shot today, and then another shot in 5-10 years from today, because they would all look different today, and there's enough planned or under way that in 5-10 years they'll look noticibly different yet again! The first series would benefit from one more earlier shot in, say, 1965, too, because it was radically different then.

What has happened/is happening in Chicago is impressive.

Finally found a decent photo of a before/after for Midtown/Downtown Atlanta

And this recent photo is still missing a lot of change off to the left of the snapshot.
