I miss those square banners. These specific ones were much before my time, but I even remember in the late 90s Folklarama but signs like that up all over the city.

Is that bigger one the Free Press building still standing and part of Portage Place, front area torn down to build the mall?

As much as sometimes it seems like we've torn down a lot of great buildings (for nothing) it's also remarkable how many we still have. That second pic could almost pass for today, except for having the towers in the background. Crazy how long the triangle lot has been a lot though.

Well you’d see it on my Flickr page, like a number of these! It was taken in 1911 or 1912.

That was the Grace Church site. The church was demolished around 1955 but nothing ever materialized for the lot, so it’s now one of our more historic parking areas.

Yes re the Free Press. Portage Place eliminated the FP loading dock area, so they moved to an industrial park.

The thermostat must be the reason for that picture. It's dropped right off the chart below -20F, and looks pretty close to -40F.

Which is damn cold whatever temperature scale you are using.

I was thinking it was +160. It's actually a thermometer rather than a thermostat, unless it is actually controlling the outdoor temperature.

I can't imagine what the Hydro bill was to maintain that temperature. I miss the days of cheap energy.

And just for some more fun for those that don't know:

-40'F is the same as -40'C
