Five years since Detroit bankruptcy..what was learned?

Sounds like forced cooperation was the way to go, as painful as it was. A sustained Detroit comeback would be good news for the region and beyond. Rooting for it.

Five years after bankruptcy, Detroit shows real gains

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/bu...tcy/792784002/

Daniel Howes, The Detroit News Published 10:37 p.m. ET July 17, 2018

New street lights glow every night across broad swaths of the city. Renovation is creeping outside the so-called "seven-point-two" — the 7.2-square-mile patch of downtown and Midtown proving magnets for both Big Money and smaller plays for restaurants and bars, retail and housing. An estimated 10,000 new housing units are planned or under construction.

I guess the main teaching here is that local businessmen, were they selfish megalomaniac billionaires can save one's town from crumbling down, when they have a minimum background of civil spirit, some complete education, some pride and respect for their own local community (whom they owe their fortunes to, by the way).

Plus you need to wipe clean the gold-plated public employee pensions brought about by cronyism and bad deals by shitbag politicians (see Illinois).

I read it 3x and I'm still not sure what he meant. Is he placing blame on CEOs of the auto industry for Detroit's 70 year decline?

It's an impressive comeback for Detroit so far. We'll see if it sustains.

This is key. They didn't exactly wipe it clean but they made the cost of pensions affordable.

with this description, I do wonder how long until Detroit starts to really take off

Seems like it needs a new influx of jobs beyond small business to sustain more growth
