The Hamilton Spectator - Construction Starts on Bernie Morelli Centre

Work is underway on a new recreation centre near Tim Hortons Field.

A $20.5-million building permit was issued in October for the Bernie Morelli Recreation Centre — a two-storey, 5,092-square-metre building, which will face the corner of Cannon Street East and Balsam Avenue North.

The centre will be separate from the revamped Jimmy Thompson Memorial Pool, but there will be a connection between the buildings.

The city has budgeted about two years for construction of the facility, said Chris Herstek, director of recreation operations.

When complete, the centre will include a gymnasium, fitness rooms, a leisure pool, an indoor walking track suspended around the gym and craft rooms.

Programming will be focused around children, youth, adults and seniors, with low-impact fitness classes like volleyball and chair aerobics on offer as well as swimming lessons and sessions for parents and babies.

Altogether, the project — which includes an ice/splash pad — is expected to ring in at around $25 million.

I like this line:

"Programming will be focused around children, youth, adults and seniors"

As opposed to everyone who is not a child, youth, adult or senior?

I actually spoke to the guy at the city who handles the bidding/tenders for city construction projects (He knows my boss) He said they have a soil thing they're working out, but soon they'll be erecting the rest of the steel structure. I had mentioned how excited I was because I'm a fan of the architecture firm who is designing it, and they said they were extremely happy with them so far.

Boring? Not the seniors I know. You need new seniors! Perhaps populist seniors, or at least trendy ones...

I'm so excited for the rec centre and the high school to be done. The stadium "precinct" is desolate as fuck basically any time that an event isn't happening at THF.

Here are some simple renders of what the interior spaces will look like. From MJMA's website.
