The history of Vancouver's public markets?

Several weeks ago, I was looking for a ramen shop in the Robson area, and found out that it was in the Robson Public Market.

Anyway, the food was great, but I found the market to be a little dilapidated and screaming for more customers... and the architecture reminded me of the 80s, with the steel trusses, tubes, roof and framework.

Now, the look, name and purpose of the building reminded me of many more like it, all of which appeared to have been done at around the same time, with varying success rates:

- Robson Public Market (barely alive)
- Richmond Public Market (still alive?)
- Chinatown Public Market and Parkade (still alive, if just)
- Bridgepoint Market (demolished, now the River Rock Casino)
- New West Public Market (now River Market, and much reduced in size)
- Lonsdale Quay (very alive)
- Granville Island (very alive)
- Surrey Public Market (ruined, to be redeveloped)
- International Market (barely alive, late entrant, Asia-themed)
- Henderson Market (barely alive, late entrant, Asia-themed)

Now, given that most of these appear to be small-scale businesses leasing back to and serving the community, there appears to be no comprehensive history on the background, trends, and results of the public market movement and the individual markets on Wikipedia... All I do know is that some of them still live and some of them don't, with only brief tidbits and mentions on what happened to them.

The questions I have about these markets are:
1. What prompted the general fad or trend for markets at the time (from the 1950s to 1990s)?
2. How many of them actually existed at their peak (with names, locations, opening/closing dates)? And how many of them still survive?
3. Did the host municipalities give support to these markets during their lifetimes?
4. Do any of them have a history worth telling or mentioning? e.g. Surrey Public Market?
6. What are the overall thoughts on the public market fad/trend? Does it still exist (with examples)? Will it come back? Can we expect to see more successes or failures? etc.
