They are putting formwork around the re-bar that up until recently was only at ground level. (the ground level at the bottom of the site). This means they are moving those columns up. It's in front of (south) the beams that are part of the Freedom Tower proper, but it shows progress in the foundation work. There's a lot of re-bar there too, to the right in the picture (the green rods). Those are coated and typical of installations in larger foundation pours (like a wide matt).

It's not completely obvious, but these are more steps that are leading to the progress we all want to see.

edit: Those stairs on the south end of the site are almost gone too.

Why those skinny columns? What are they supposed to do?

Can someone PLEASE tell me the reason behind this? Looks like another one was added.

It just puzzles me why they are using wimpy-looking beams for a giant tall office tower of this magnetude!

I'm not sure which columns you reference, but I assure you they are far from flimsy or puny. Probably the angle of the camera combined with the distance might lead to that 'appearance'; however, they're probably the size of small cars when they become encased with concrete.

If you're talking about the skinny column between those fats, then I think because it's at the point where the entrance to the building will be, so it doesn't have to be that strong.

And no, no columns have added for a long time, that skinny one at east side has been there for a long time. And you guys who can't notice the progress, look closer and you'll see it...

Yep, they are still pretty big columns

I remember seeing a picture in a newspaper from when they were allowing people to sign the white columns. The columns appeared to be as wide as a person is tall. I''ll see if I can find a picture.

It's somewhere in the forum, I think this thread.

Ghost, I think I see a skinny at the corner as well. But I read that they're going to be encased in concrete anyway.

Its wierd because Ii have used and been in that station, and for some reason its kind of sad to see it go. If thats the case for me (and i have only been in it once), I wonder how people who worked in the WTC feel.

Just a thought......

Why does 3WTC appear so small as compared to the freedom tower in the image ? Or is it just me ?

That's just the drawing. it IS bigger than that.

Carlos, the searchers looking for remains were there all along, since the last time remains were found in the manhole. They never really left, but they are there to keep the 09-11 families happy just in case more remains are found.

And you're right, the rebuild will continue on as planned, on schedule.

Renderings of the new WTC are never correct. 2 World Trade is about 15 feet shorter that the FT's roof.
