Really awesome projects around Canada. They are all either very tall or contains malls, sports stadiums, libraries, etc. Very nice! Downtown Vancouver will feel relatively rustic after all these mega projects are completed.

"Only the office building and the residential building, which is not owned by the development team, at the corner of Cambie Street and West 41st Avenue will be retained. While there will not be any improvements to the exterior of the residential building, the office building will be re-skinned to ensure its look blends in with the rest of the redevelopment."

I wonder if we will never see that building redeveloped to something much bigger or will it become an orphaned relic and oddity?

I like it.

Small orphaned buildings and random relics help make a far more interesting urban space IMO.

an article from Retail Insider

Oakridge Centre Retail Transformation to Anchor Vancouver’s ‘City of the Future’ [Exclusive Interview]

April 03, 2018

Quote:
The retail centre will include a collection of conceptualized streets that will house a variety of retail tenants. These are described with terms such as “luxe run”, “trend experience”, and a “high street”. The mall’s “luxe run” could house more than 20 international luxury retailers, according to Mr. Clydesdale, including some that currently lack a presence in the market or in Canada, for that matter. Given the real estate constrictions of downtown Vancouver, Oakridge could end up housing tenants that would ultimately become a second 'luxury zone' for Vancouver.

The pedestrian-only high street will be part of the mall’s outdoor component that will run north-south along the length of the mall’s western perimeter. A new perimeter road will also run along the western edge of the property.

The centre will feature two larger anchors, as well as some smaller anchors that will be part of the retail mix. Hudson’s Bay will continue to be Oakridge’s largest anchor tenant in a brand new 140,000 sq.ft. store — it will be the centre’s sole traditional department store anchor, replacing an existing Bay location that was once a Woodward’s store. Oakridge will also house a major grocery tenant — Sobeys which will replace the centre’s existing Safeway store (both are owned by Empire Company). QuadReal is working with key existing retailers such as Harry Rosen, Apple and Tiffany & Co. to create flagship stores that will be aligned with its future thinking for experiential retail.

What I don't like is having international "luxury" retailers opening here instead of in and around Alberni.

Instead of, or as well as? Most retailers in Oakridge already have a downtown location (or will be getting one).

The article was suggesting that there would be retailers at oakridge that won't be elsewhere in the region. So I took it as of instead.

But yes I would rather have these stores open up just around alberni. When stores open up in other areas as well it doesn't ma,e alberni as special.

Lots of signs pointing to Sobeys retiring Safeway branding?

Why, what's the difference other than name?

When Empire Group bought Safeway Canada they did not buy the name. Honestly I am surprised the branding stuck around as long as it has. I would have thought they'd all be Sobeys years ago.

They already killed a lot of Safeway goodwill by changing the in house brands.

With so few markets around in the area, it doesn't matter if it's Safeway, Sobeys or TomDickHarry Market: it will still be popular, considering that this area could potentially be where Vancouver's next avant garde urban centre would be located.

just nostalgia.

I don't shop there much anyway, sometimes for air miles but other than that they are way overpriced.

Not a difference so much as the perception of a difference. If it's "not the same store," that could potentially drive off a lot of regulars.
