Unless I am mistaken, this is will be the first proposed apartment development (outside of UAB) that will exceed 300 units. I guess that is a pretty good milestone!

I talked to one of the neighbors near that site and was told that another neighbor filed a lawsuit against the developer because he wants to be part of the development in some way. Sounds goofy to me but we live in strange times and stranger things have happened.

I walked past the site this morning and notice some demolition has taken place inside the building, there is a Bob Cat front end loader inside, light fixtures have been taken down, some demolition going on in the back of the building, and a large front window has been removed and replaced with a large sheet of plywood probably how they got the Bob Cat in the building.

There's activity going on at the Powell Avenue Steam Plant. Construction fence up, some of the bricked in windows have been knocked out. Basically a lot of cleaning up and preparing for renovations and construction.

^good info. removing the bricked up windows alone should completely transform that place.

Thank God, I was getting nervous that this thing would inevitably fall through.

Demolition begins to clear way for Highland apartment development

Birmingham Biz Journal
January 20, 2015

Quote:
Demolition work has commenced at the site of a proposed 15-story apartment development on Highland Ave.
Developer Harbert Realty Services Senior Vice President Dean Nix said the one-story building that sat on the site of the future 315-unit project has been demolished.

........

There will be a high rise with 227 units in the front of the development and 88 units in the back, with one-to-two-bedroom options ranging from 540 to 835 square feet for the one-bedroom units and 900 to 1,150 square feet for the two-bedroom option.
The $53 million development will also include 5,000 square feet of retail and restaurant space.

I'm actually getting nervous about the 2021 World Games announcement. We'll find out tomorrow morning.

Paul Osborne at insidethegames.biz seems to think that Birmingham is widely considered the favorite. LINK

Meanwhile, Sam Sturgis at CityLab thinks Birmingham is a long shot in this article about colleges shutting down sports programs. LINK

I am too. It should be in the bag, but something like this could never be simple and easy. 4:00 AM we will know. It needs to happen. Birmingham needs this.

I agree. It would finally allow the city to invest in improvements to infrastructure that have been needed for the longest time.
