Look at the density and number of tower cranes below the tower. (just above the centre of the crescent in the picture).......wow

Every time I look at this it just seems so contrary to everything that Islam stands for...Imagine if they built this right next to the Vatican or the Wailing Wall in Jerusalem. For all the posturing over the sanctity of Muslim land, they seem to have desicrated it themselves in the name of condos. Why not build it in Riyad if the Saudis had such an urge to display their wealth, there are much more subtle, respectful ways of paying tribute to a venerated place, than to tear it apart and dwarf it with gaudy towers. Surely their must be a great deal of local opposition, has there been any report of it? I'd like to know the thought process behind such a completely dehumanizing structure in such a spiritual place.

Tallest golden minaret gets ready

Over 200 workers working to finish Makkah project meant to break many records

Tallest golden minaret
July 5, 2011

Riyadh: Nearly 250 workers are working to finish the construction of what will soon be the tallest golden minaret in the world which is targeted for completion within three weeks before Ramadan.

Work on the minaret, which will be topped by what will also be touted to become the world's largest crescent, is progressing well, sources said.

The minaret is being constructed on top of the Makkah Royal Clock Tower.

When completed, the Makkah Royal Clock Tower project is expected to break many records in the construction world, including the tallest hotel, constructed with the tallest clock tower displaying the world's largest clock face. It will also have the world's largest building floor area, and will become the second tallest building in the world, surpassed only by Dubai's Burj Khalifa

GMT challenge

The project is expected to challenge the supremacy of the Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) or the universal time zone reference.

The giant clock of Makkah is set to tick a new time standard which some scholars believe will be an ideal alternative to GMT.

Upon completion, calls for prayers will be made from the Makkah Royal Clock Tower minaret, according to sources.

Trial run of the clock was held at the beginning of last year's Ramadan.

The gigantic Makkah clock project was constructed on top of tower number five of King Abdul Aziz Endowment project, which consists of seven towers.

The clock tower is situated 380 metres above the ground and would have a total height of 601 metres.

The giant clocks will be visible from all districts of Makkah. The clock is made of carbon fibre materials with a special glass ceramic on top. This material used is over three times stronger than steel and is being used in the aerospace industry.

The tower housing the clock was built in a peculiar Islamic style of architecture with The name of Allah inscribed on each of the clock's four faces.

Two lifts will carry visitors to a balcony below the clocks. The complex overlooks the Grand Mosque that Muslims face for daily prayers.

Time pieces

•The front and back clock measure about 43x43m while side clocks are about 43x39m
•The clock is six times bigger than London's Big Ben
•The Big Ben measures about 7x7 metres.
•200m separate the clock's dial and the top of the hilal (crescent), which measures 23 meters in diameter
•The supreme name of Allah and the Shahadah are visible above the clock

1- in islam we don't worship buildings, therefor we don't care if there was a giant spaceship next to the mosque.

2- the number of pilgrims within 10 years will increase to 10 millions, they will not bock a hotel in riyadh.

3- this building the biggest endowment in the history of man kind, meaning all the profits goes to the maintenance of the 2 holy mosques in saudi and NO where else.

4- u can't compare islam to any other religion, the vatican is an touchable museum right now. however makkah has a complete face lift every decade, so don't be surprised if we demolish this tower in 10 years time to build an other one.

I think I understand the theory of "Not valuing buildings" as a tenet for a religion and it is a noble concept in theory. However in practice, as it is done in Makkah, it seems wasteful.

So spending billions of dollars on an ornate building, replete with artistic embellishments will be scrapped in a few years for something else? What a waste of time and money. Why not just build the cheapest, biggest, simplest glass box with no ornamentation or artisan's handiwork, and save all that money for giving to the poor or whatever Islam does value?

It seems like such a waste if you're not going to value the completed work anyway. Then why all the detail and expensive materials ?

It is hypocritical to say buildings have no value, and yet be willing to cover them in gold and expensive ornate details. These are diametrically opposed philosophies.

And further to that point...

Almost no religion "Worships" the actual building they are housed in... They only "value" them as icons of that belief structure and as magnets to draw the faithful to a town center.

Your continual confusion of replacing the word "worship" for "value" is indicative of your lack of knowledge of the world's other religions and disrespect for their belief structure.

Just because others place a value or intrinsic measure to a building does not mean that they hold it to be holy, or sacred in its own right. Instead it is standing in place of something that it represents. Cherishing the structure and maintaining it through preservation is how they hold a connection to the spirit, or thing, or event, or miracle, or history with which the structure is connected.

Please stop saying other religions "Worship" buildings. It is just not true.

Install the fifth and final part on this day

I have a video interval to install all the pieces of the crescent, what would you suggest naming this offer or choose a suitable title?

Thank You All

What a Milestone! What a achievement. This building will serve as an iconic symbol and it is a fitting tribute to all the hard work and sacrifice that has gone into making this happen. Not only will the building house pilgrims and the 10 million plus expected over the years. It will also provide shade, wind and an aesthetical back drop to the already beautiful sacred mosque
Well done to everyone for their support. Mecca is going to look amazing over the next few years with the large construction projects

The building is situated near the Sacred Mosque to make it easier for pilgrims to commute to the Mosque particularly in the sweltering heat which is often the case. The building will also serve as a clock - incidentally it is situated in the centre of Earth (Middle Earth) so the clock is a fitting tribute to the holy mosque proximity.

I agree with your post that other religions do not worship the building it is what is worshipped inside that differentiates the religions - i believe respect and sensitivity should be shown. As for Muslims the most famous building is the Mosque itself! - Even if you had the best and beautiful skyscrapers on Earth present and future around the mosque - it would never detract from the awe Muslims feel around the first Mosque built by Abraham on Earth. This is the most famous building on Earth for Muslims all over the world
Buildings, particularly Skyscrapers like Burj Khalifa, Canton Tower, SWFC etc. are symbols of power, prestige, beauty and in my opinion celebration of humanity, Today we achieved another milestone
