I noticed this past weekend that they dug up the alley and have laid new cement. A resident of The Plaza Lofts I know also mentioned that they were sent an email from their concierge saying that work was to begin in the next few weeks on the hotel.

I actually agree. We just got back from Denver, and they have some of the nicest brick mid-rise buildings around. Very charming.

I think brick does add a nice tecture to a highrise along with warmth and elegance, and it is one of the two things I like about the Ashton.

Should that be true, it's definitely positive news.

Thanks, DowntownGirl421 and welcome to the forum! I'm sure hoping that they hold there word to it. But on the plus side they still have the " Coming soon to Austin " logo on their main page, which sounds like some progress being made. http://www.hotelzaza.com/#index

More work happening this morning. Looks like they're expanding the sidewalk on 4th Street. hopefully this is another good sign

The sidewalk work is unrelated to Gables/Zaza. It is part of a City ADA improvement program. I think it is incredibly stupid because Gables is just going to tear it out to put in Great Streets sidewalks for their project.

According to the Gables development office as of yesterday - this is expected to break ground in July.

Yeah that's pretty awesome. This is one of my favorite projects currently planned.

That's what I was thinking. Why bother fixing up the sidewalks now when they'll be closed and covered in construction gunk for nearly 2 years.

Agreed... They should just leave it as is until construction is almost over then rebuild the sidwalks before it opens.

I'm betting it was simply a scheduling snafu. If they pause on the construction of that portion of sidewalk during the construction it would likely interfere with the construction schedule of another project 2 years from now when this tower is complete. And then there are variables to consider such as it's not even a definite that the building will break ground and finish on schedule.

The COA finished the fancy colored sidewalk on Colorado St next to the Colorado building like a week before they started digging. So Its likely stuff in the works and planned and timing just stinks, but the builder will have to return it to perfect conditions so why should the COA care, they did their part as planned.

This thing might have some life after all. Here's a slew of permit requests (96!) from this week for 401 Guadalupe for both hotel and apartment finish outs:

With this one, the Aloft and the UT System Headquarters there's going to be quite a bit of tower construction in that area. That's going to be something to see since most of the construction so far has been along the river.

I can't wait for the big projects around Red River and Cesar Chavez to get going. That will be a lot of tall cranes in a very small area. It will even be much more impressive than Green and Seaholm, and it's right next to I35.

Don't forget Aspen Heights should be breaking ground soon as well.
