Shanghai Bistro closed for good. The owners also owned Nikko Sushi upstairs on Robson where the White Spot used to be, just off Burrard St. That also closed down a couple of years ago. They then opened a place called Azia that was on Smithe St. next to the Scotia Bank theater; that also recently closed down.

am angry about the loss of Sambas, simply because it offered something different downtown, where everything is a Cactus Club / Earls style restaurant or Asian, it seems.

They served kangaroo meat which is probably the best meat I have ever had (love it). Now where can I get all you can eat kangaroo?????

SAMBA BRAZILIAN STEAKHOUSE

We apologize for the inconvenience but with our present location being re-developed into an office tower we are presently looking for a new location.

Please check back, stay tuned and visit our other restaurants. Mucho Brigado

The tenant mix was also good and added to the retail vibrancy of the area. The new office building will be an immeasurable improvement over the parking structure, but let's note that this was pretty exceptional parking structure.
But it sure was ugly, in my opinion!

Here's what it looked like in the early 1980s:

It actually looked better in the 80's with the greenery draped on and around it.

Looked a hell of a lot better in the 80's, with the mcdonalds facade and without the cheap awnings. Kinda annoying how plain grey seems to be the answer to all unresolved walls.

Had to laugh seeing that old photo showing the intersection with only a STOP sign to manage traffic.

How times change....

Ain't that the truth! I actually didn't notice.

I agree, this building looked way better as is, back in the day, like a lot of buildings from that era in this city, before they were meddled with.

I stumbled on this tonight on the new City of Vancouver Archive site... May 15 1974... Since the fencing is now back, this cries out for a before and after photo, bonus points if now picture is dated May 15 2012 http://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/b...truction-2;rad

They are still working on demolition-prep. Some jack-hammering can be heard from inside, though no external signs of demolition yet.

Talking to one of the hotel employees next door, he suggested that there was some worry about the demolition causing damage to their building. Extra caution to ensure the surrounding sites are undamaged may be the reason why it appears to be taking longer than expected.

They originally planned 9 months just for the demo, I think they are only 2 months in so far right?

Unless they're planning to blast it down, it's hard to see why the hotel's all worked up.

Edmonton just took down a similar sized (concrete?) office building without any drama, to my knowledge, using a large jackhammer.

that old GYM space up top sure looks "added on" to me. was it part of the original build? or an add-on/expansion? I know we talked about the posibility of that in this thread b4 but I don't think we figured out anything?

anyone?
