Shanghai Bistro closed for good. The owners also owned Nikko Sushi upstairs on Robson where the White Spot used to be, just off Burrard St. That also closed down a couple of years ago. They then opened a place called Azia that was on Smithe St. next to the Scotia Bank theater; that also recently closed down.
am angry about the loss of Sambas, simply because it offered something different downtown, where everything is a Cactus Club / Earls style restaurant or Asian, it seems.
They served kangaroo meat which is probably the best meat I have ever had (love it). Now where can I get all you can eat kangaroo?????

Before it's torn down I think it is worth noting that this is probably the best 'urban' parking structure in the city. It has street-front retail on both Thurlow and Alberni streets and a second floor of underground retail beneath. It had continuous awnings for weather protection and even the design of the building presented a pretty nice fenestration pattern of open spaces and solid walls, which are far more in keeping with the aesthetic of a building than the open maws of most parking garages. The tenant mix was also good and added to the retail vibrancy of the area. The new office building will be an immeasurable improvement over the parking structure, but let's note that this was pretty exceptional parking structure.
Looked a hell of a lot better in the 80's, with the mcdonalds facade and without the cheap awnings. Kinda annoying how plain grey seems to be the answer to all unresolved walls.

Talking to one of the hotel employees next door, he suggested that there was some worry about the demolition causing damage to their building. Extra caution to ensure the surrounding sites are undamaged may be the reason why it appears to be taking longer than expected.

Unless they're planning to blast it down, it's hard to see why the hotel's all worked up.
Edmonton just took down a similar sized (concrete?) office building without any drama, to my knowledge, using a large jackhammer.
that old GYM space up top sure looks "added on" to me. was it part of the original build? or an add-on/expansion? I know we talked about the posibility of that in this thread b4 but I don't think we figured out anything?
