indeed.

funny enough, when I saw Helio run and grab the security guy my first thought was this thing just got all the publicity we could ask for.

My favorite comment I over heard: "wait for her, wait for her, wait for her, hooray" the crowd had stopped clapping long before patrick made her way to the finish line and some guy next to me felt it was necessary to point out just how far behind she was. i approved.

CTV News is reporting that the Edmonton Indy is dead, the city walked away from negotiations.

That shouldn't be a major shock to anyone.
Attendance has decreased each year, the city loses money on it, taxpayers end up paying...doesn't look good.

here's hoping the city is just playing hardball and posturing for all those losers who don't see the massive benefit in this event.....

Time to hit the bottle.

I may have spoke too soon.
Apparently it's about where the track would go, not anything I said.

My apologies.

Attendance that is some of the highest on the circuit, a great event for the city that will FINALLY be managed by a competent group, and huge potential for associated events and promotion.

Need more info, but things like this truly make me wonder what we are trying to do here.

I agree...City had a deal including the West location of the track and later tries to move it and expect the operator to suck up that cost? If the City screws this up someone should be sacked!!! The Mayor better explain this fiasco and fix it!!

"Ah, memories"...Cost overruns aside, decent run while it lasted

Edmonton’s Indy race spins out over costs to change track
After three years of heavy losses, summer car race leaves city

By Dan Barnes and Conal Pierse, edmontonjournal.com

EDMONTON — The Edmonton Indy, this city's signature summer auto racing event, has turned its last wheel and turnstile.

Three sources familiar with negotiations between the City of Edmonton and race promoters Octane Management of Montreal confirmed Tuesday evening the July event will be taken off the Indy Racing League schedule immediately.

The race lost $9.2 million in its first two years and an estimated $3 million in 2010...

Sad to lose it but if this in any way expedites the closure of ECCA I am all for it

As far as new location for the race - ABC

“We are disappointed that the city and the promoter were unable to reach an agreement on the venue changes,” the sanctioning body said in a statement. “It’s unfortunate that in a time when INDYCAR is experiencing momentum and growth, the city would want to miss out on the opportunity to be part of it. We’ve enjoyed our time at Edmonton as the fans there truly embraced Indy car racing. "

Edmonton seems to have all the basic rules are in place for a city (education, infrastructure, public transit, etc.) and in fact, many of those things are top-notch!

Unfortunately, that's kinda where Edmonton seems to stop.

Edmonton and Edmontonians need to have faith that those rules are solid enough that they're not going to fall apart even if we maintain them as status quo for a while. It's time to start taking advantage of what great basic-city things we have and give Edmonton some personality!

Giving up this race is the opposite of what I'd like to see.

This is not a good thing to happen to Edmonton.

But look - if the Indy isn't coming back at all here, is this going to help speed up the closure of the City Centre Airport?

Lame. I'm no fan of backstopping money losing events but this one should have been kept.

And I'm sorry, but for all the anti- Northlands crusading, one has to wonder if we'd still have the event if it was still being promoted and run by Northlands.

Here's a crazy thought...we lose Indy for now, but we gain F1 in a few years time once the YXD thing is sorted out? Think that can happen?

Not unpossible, but basically.

Their markets are the China's, India's, and Middle East's of the world.

While we did host some world class motorsports events with top world drivers back at Edmonton International Speedway, things are very different now.

I agree with Noodle.

Montreal is even lucky they retained their race. If the powers that be had a better choice for North America they would be out of there.

Look at where they have been going of late plus the money needed to secure an event is enormous.

Sorry we are loosing the Indy but the economics aren't there even if the attendance was. If they could have worked something out and done Proper Advertising it may have broke even this year.

Great shots Cold where are they from. I'll have to scan some of my early photos of the Can Am with Jackie Stewart and company driving the McClearans and Chaparrals.

I think the straight is about 140th ave and Hudson way now
