I love streetcars and bike paths so I thought I'd add a couple of things about some around town.

http://saltcycle.blogspot.com/2011/1...-and.html#more
There is a meeting tonight about the Sugarhouse Street Car expansion at Westminster. Also discussed there is the Salt Lake City Canal Trail, a bike/running trail that will go from 800 S to 3300 S and be around 1050 E (although it does wind its way through the neighborhoods quite a bit). I would LOVE to see this trail actually happen. It would be a great addition to Sugarhouse.

http://saltcycle.blogspot.com/2011/1...ine-trail.html
Also the first phase of the Line 9 trail is going to open. This is the trail that runs along the old rail corridor on 9th South. You can read more about the trail here: http://www.slcgov.com/ced/planning/pages/the9line.htm. I don't know exactly what Phase 1 entails. I think it may just be from 700 w to Redwood Rd, although it is supposed to go all the way to the surplus canal (and I believe that bike lanes were added between 200 W and 700 W on 9th S)

Also one interesting thing from the Saltcycle Blog. The area of 9th S and 9th W is going to be renamed the River District Gardens. I guess since 9th and 9th was already taken, it was the next best option.

I like it; a lot.

It makes a lot of sense; especially the charging system. I like that it doesn't have an electricity cable system, much less clutter than overhead wires.

Great idea. love that is uses the space above the cars instead of sharing and restricting traffic.

Someone show this to a local TV station there in Salt Lake.

I don't like it at all! How does either the train or cars underneath change lanes?
Would be much better if the supports raising the train and guideway were permanent and didn't move at all, because it would be far easier to avoid.
Then you'll have to figure out what to do with all the overhanging structures above the traffic lanes, street lamps, traffic signals, power, cable, and telephone cables, which either must be removed or be raised so high that automobile traffic can't see them.

That's the real reason why we don't have flying cars.

The video will alleviate all your concerns.

I noticed a few weeks ago one of the blue lights on the bridge is out. Salt Lake City doesn't replace non-essential burned-out lights anymore, so is it just going to be like that forever? It would really look crappy if even just a handful of those lights went out. I know they're LEDs and are supposed to last a long time, but clearly they're not invincible.

Let's hope they bought some spares. :\

I notice the other day while driving down North Temple that those poles that goes along the middle of the trax lines ( whatever they are called ) are different colors. Downtown these poles are Black, along North Temple the poles are a Dark Green color and then as you head in towards the airport those poles become a light green-ish color. Not sure yet if I like that or not.

Yeah. I'm not a fan of the diarrhea-green poles on the ballasted track near the airport. The design of them is pretty gross as well.

Just out of curiosity...

Does anyone know of any discussion to re-name the "City Center" TRAX station on Main Street to "City Creek Center" or "City Creek"?

Seeing the "City Center" TRAX station sitting under the City Creek skybridge would give tourists a legitimate reason to label us all as morons incapable of naming our mass-transit stations accordingly.

The name City Center has to do with the center of the grid system. It has nothing to do with City Creek Center.

I understand that. But your post does not answer my question.

"City Center" TRAX station is basically ground-zero of the City Creek Center project... I would think it would be appropriate to re-name it.

I don't know, there doesn't seem to be any precedent of doing something like that (except for Daybreak).

You have Planetarium, Arena, Stadium, Ballpark, etc.
