So I searched through the listed time tables of various transit agencies and counted how many departures they had from their main cities... for example, Seattle's Sounder trains all depart from King Street Station, just like all our FrontRunner trains leave from Salt Lake Central Station. Some cities are large enough that there are multiple main stations, such as New York City (Penn Station and Grand Central Terminal), Chicago (Union Station, LaSalle Street Station, and Millennium Park Station), and Boston (North and South Stations). I included departures from all of these stations. I also included Amtrak departures, as many transit agencies include Amtrak trains on their schedules as well (Salt Lake City has two Amtrak departures per day, so we benefited too).

Then I took the total train departures from each city and divided it by the population of each city. The results surprised me:

Clearly Salt Lake City is benefiting from its lower population (lack of incorporating suburbs into the city), but that can't explain all of it. The largest thing to take away from this chart is that FrontRunner is AWESOME. I mean, REALLY AWESOME. Take a look at other cities that started running their commuter trains at the same time as SLC, such as Minneapolis, Albuquerque, and Seattle - and look at how many departures per day they have. The reason they are different is that they decided to use existing tracks owned by the freight railroads, which meant smaller up-front (capital) costs, but much higher operating costs. FrontRuner has its own tracks, which cost $$$, but operating trains over tracks you already own is relatively cheap. Also, it means you get to schedule your own trains, so they can leave as often as you like. I know of no other transit agency that has done this (since WWII), which is why SLC is 3rd on the list of daily train departures per capita (And 2nd if all Amtrak trains are removed from counting).
Cool way to look at it

International Airport Redevelopment, Upgrade and Expansion Progressing Nicely

$1.8B project to take Salt Lake City International Airport to new heights

By Miranda Collette, Deseret News

http://www.deseretnews.com/article/8...w-heights.html

SALT LAKE CITY — Construction is set to begin Friday on a new project that will take the 20 million people who fly through Utah each year to new heights.

A $1.8 billion, three-story terminal and linear concourse will be under construction for the next eight to 10 years to replace the current Salt Lake City International Airport with a new
airport that highlights Utah's beauty and cuts down on energy costs.

Plans call for a new parking facility, a new terminal and half of the concourse to be completed by 2019. The project is set to end by summer 2022, after the existing terminals and parking
garage are demolished.

Mike Williams, director of the Salt Lake City International Airport terminal redevelopment program, said the construction zone will be southwest of the existing facility to help minimize the
impact to passengers.

"Our goal is just to make it seamless so you can just get to the airport like you do today," ...

..Utahns also offered their opinions on what the new airport should include after a public comment process.

"Many people are very interested in seeing the natural beauty of Utah being brought into the facility," Riley said, "and the other thing, no surprise, is people are very interested in making
sure technology and Wi-Fi is a big part of the new design."

Glass walls will extend from the floor to the ceiling, offering visitors breathtaking views of the Wasatch Front while they wait at their gates, Williams said.

"There was a lot of feedback that we should incorporate as much light as possible, so we have a lot of glass and a lot of views of the outdoors," he said. "Utah’s a beautiful place, and you want
to be able to see it."

Airport officials said the new facility will create a sense of place while incorporating additional sustainable practices, products and technology...

Summit County Council green lights transit center at Kimball Junction

Angelique McNaughten, The Park Record

http://www.parkrecord.com/summit_cou...nsit-center-at

The Summit County Council on Wednesday gave the Public
Works Department and Park City Transit the green light to motor ahead
with a Kimball Junction transit center...

... Officials say the transit center would feature an outdoor plaza, access
to Wi-Fi, arrival and departure boards, shelters and landscaping.

The transit center is not intended to encourage a park-and-ride system
in the Kimball Junction area. Instead, it is meant to offer quicker travel
times into Park City.

"I see it as a circulatory system," said Derrick Radke, Summit County
Public Works Department director. "We're trying to make it quicker and
more efficient to get people in and out...

The need for a Kimball Junction transit facility was identified in a 2007
Summit County/Park City Short-Range Transit Plan, according to a
County Courthouse staff report prepared in anticipation of the
meeting.

The report states that the current transit system carries 2 million
passengers per year with nearly one-third of riders starting and ending
in the Snyderville Basin.

"This facility is crucial to the realignment of county routes to provide
enhanced frequency and efficiency and also to support planned
development in the Kimball Junction area," Radke said.

Kent Cashel, long-range transportation planner with City Hall, said the
Kimball Junction area is a "critical spot for the transit center."...

Interconnect Gondola flies through Basin panel

Vail Resorts created a mock-up of an Interconnect Gondola car as the company prepared for talks with officials in Park City and Summit County about a proposal to link Park City Mountain Resort and Canyons Resort with a gondola. The Snyderville Basin Planning Commission on Tuesday approved the gondola. The Planning Commission in Park City is scheduled to consider the proposal at a meeting on Feb. 25. (Courtesy of Vail Resorts)

Jay Hamburger, The Park Record

http://www.parkrecord.com/park_city-...gh-basin-panel

The Snyderville Basin Planning Commission unanimously approved the section of the gondola that will be built in unincorporated Summit County. The gondola's route through the approval process will now head to the Marsac Building.

The gondola is the key part of an ambitious set of upgrades at PCMR and Canyons Resort as the Colorado company links the two properties into one resort. Called the Interconnect Gondola, it will carry eight people per car between a spot close to the bottom of the Silverlode lift at PCMR to the Flatiron lift at Canyons Resort. It will have a midstation unloading point atop Pine Cone Ridge as well...

...Vail Resorts intends to build the gondola this summer in anticipation of an opening for the 2015-2016 ski season. It is the centerpiece of the company's plans to spend more than $50 million on improvements this year as the two properties are linked into one...

IMO, Salt Lake City is an excellent example of what a city and greater metro can accomplish, when the political power from both sides of the isle can come together on smart urban issues.

Threads in this subforum are reserved for transportation development news and discussions only please.

News about other types of urban development should be posted in their respective place elsewhere in the forum.

Such off topic posts will be deleted.

My advice would be start a thread in the projects and construction forum or the mountain west forum titled "Salt Lake TOD news". Great info and effort that is very much appreciated, but this is the wrong forum for it.

(and if such a thread is created, I could even import all of the off topic posts from this thread, to that new thread. Hate to see such posts go to waste if they're not already appearing elsewhere on SSP, but this thread and subforum need to stay on topic.)

UTA Northern Utah County Transit Study

I was going to post an image of UTA's proposed light rail stations in Utah County, but I was not sure of the correct way to source the image as I was going to copy it out of their PDF report.

Anyways ... Utah Transit Authority ... wrote a 170 page Northern Utah County Transit Study that is interesting.

The full report can be found on their website at the following link:

GREENbike breaks national ridership record

Isaac Riddle Reports @ http://www.slcitynews.com/greenbike-...ership-record/

..."The bike share program’s network has grown at a brisk
pace. The program launched in April of 2013 with 10 bike share stations
and 55 active bikes system. In the over two years since, the program
consists of roughly 200 bikes and 25 stations in the downtown and the Central City neighborhood.

According to Robin Hutcheson, the director of Salt Lake’s
Transportation Division, GREENbike has helped improve
downtown connectivity by allowing residents and visitors to make small
trips across downtown...The Alliance estimates that over the past
seven months, on average, each bike has been used over 500 times.
When GREENbike added five new stations, plus additional bikes and
expansion of existing stations this May, ridership increased by almost
300 percent winning them an award at a national bike share conference in September.

“Our 2015 goal was to increase ridership and hit 66,000 rides by the end
of December,” said GREENbike director Ben Bolte in a press release. “By
the end of the first week in November, we already exceeded that goal by 52
percent with our 100,000th ride. This explosive growth clearly illustrates what
we’ve said all along: more stations equals greater convenience and greater convenience
equals a lot more riders. If we were to substantially expand the system, the possibilities are near limitless.”

It's good to see expanded international service out of SLC, especially with these recent announcements on international airlines Air Canada and KLM.

http://airlineroute.net/2015/12/15/kl-slc-may16/

Also worth noting, Delta announced nonstop service from SLC to Toronto just days after Air Canada did. Delta's flight will begin one day earlier as well.

Second, the Delta nonstop to AMS from SLC that began last summer has been very successful and obviously the two companies saw the need to add additional flights on peak travel days. Also this helps spread the KLM brand in the western/rocky mountain region of the country. As mentioned already, KLM only serves in the U.S., LAX, SFO, O'Hare, JFK, Houston, Atlanta, and Dulles. When KLM served Baltimore, Anchorage, and Memphis, it was not the same KLM that is around today. The KLM now is all around a much stronger airline and now also has the strong partnership with Delta. The flight to SLC will be a great addition to KLM's network and will have great success I believe...the gate situation can get tricky because the London's flight time does overlap with international arrivals also using the international gates and the FIS facility coming in from Mexico City, Cancun, Guadalajara, Puerto Vallarta, and Los Cabos. Here is a link in the SL Tribune about the new KLM flight.

http://www.sltrib.com/home/3311114-1...lines-to-start

Again, this is awesome news for Salt Lake City...Now SLC will have 4 daily nonstop flights to Europe depending on the day of the week in summer 2016. So cool!

Also one more thing worth noting. All of the new flights added by Alaska Airlines at the SLC airport have been the driving force for the high rise in passengers traveling in/out of SLC. Alaska Airlines has said they have been very happy with their SLC flights. Alaska currently flies from SLC to Portland, Seattle, Boise, San Jose, San Francisco, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Diego.

Here's an interesting little on topic article in the L.A. Times from this morning regarding Americas ten most well liked airports.

Central Metro - New gondola links Utah ski areas to create Park City, America's largest ski resort

The Quicksilver gondola and Miners Camp restaurant officially opened to skiers and boarders on Friday. (Andrew Braden / Vail Resorts Inc.)

The plan had been a long time in the making, part of $50 million in improvements to create a mega-ski resort that goes by the overarching name Park City Mountain Resort, or Park City for short. (Canyons becomes Canyons Village at Park City.)

It's an eight-and-a-half-minute ride to get from one mountain to the other. The link means skiers and snowboarders have access to 300 trails, 41 lifts and 7,300 acres of terrain.

And when you need a breather between runs, there's the 500-seat Miners Camp restaurant. Handmade flatbread pizzas and local draft beers are on the menu.

Downtown Adj. - Utah Transit Authority - New Natural Gas Fueling Facility

The media recently covered the opening of UTA's new natural gas fueling facility, which was built next to the railroad tracks at about 700 West and 400 South. This got me looking
into UTA's plans for the area. This new fueling station is the first part of the "transit center" which will replace UTA's current downtown bus operations center.

Much of the historic Denver
& Rio Grande shop/freight
area just to the west of the tracks at Salt Lake Central will be torn down for this new center. But it looks like the largest building will be rehabilitated
and used as the new bus maintenance building. I haven't heard any public announcements about when (and if) construction will start. Though UTA put out a bid last year for demolition at what is think is the site.

I'm pretty sure the thread I created for the new airport got deleted and this one maybe was risen from the dead? Either way. I'm reposting this because it seems to be missing.

A big update with the renderings and design for the new airport!

SLC International Airport to get another concourse

SALT LAKE CITY — The airport is expanding again.

The Salt Lake City International Airport announced on Monday that it would be adding another concourse to the terminal redevelopment project, adding 30 extra gates with room to grow. The north concourse would cost $740 million to build, bringing the total project from $1.8 to $2.6 billion.

Nice work! This means the old concourse A, B, C, D to be demolished? They can build midfield concourse. I think it's time to build new concourse and there's will be no more old concourse A, B, C, D and E. I think WN can expanded more gates in the midfield concourse or whoever if the airlines will growth more. It will happens. Don't you have any idea about new international airlines to come to SLC? How many gates what they have for international gates capable?

The speed with which SLC Int. is expanding it's flight numbers/destinations, both national and international is amazing. Makes sense for them to add the additional concourse now. The new airport as planned, had already outgrown it's capacity before even getting close to completing it's current construction.

A few things have changed with the New Airport plans:

1. The second concourse will be built in the first phase of the aiport.

2. This means that the entire old airport will be torn down and not grafted into the new airport.

3. The tunnel running underground connecting the two concourses will not have a tram, but rather, several moving walkways.

4. The first phase of the airport will be completed by 2020.
