So what is the structure rising in the middle? Do we have reason to be excited? Could it be support for a taller art feature that was discussed months ago?

Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but in the detailed close-up renderings of the crown available online, you can see this tower-like structure in the center.

^^^Could you post a rendering that shows a center support structure in the crown for us? I can see "X" bracing, but a center structure is rather difficult for me to make out. I don't really see it. Thanks.

Sorry, images I try to post from Flickr never show up. Luckily, the image I'm talking about is on this thread. Page 19, post 378 by fimiak. Zoom in and this structure is clearly visible, especially right above the top of the core. It certainly is not there in the image you posted, SFView.

^I put that same image you are talking about on the first post when I made this thread years ago, so no need to search through the recycling bin to find it

We might as well post that rendering up. It was posted in 2013. Thanks to SFSkyline for pointing that out. I can see the middle support structure, but I'm not sure if it is actually centered. I seems to terminate about one level below the top. I'm not sure what it is supporting, since I believe the perimeter structure can support itself. Could it be for lighting, antenna, other electronic devices, or does it actually help support the crown, or something else? We should probably wait to see how the construction and possible news unfolds. It may not lead to a spire, but in the meantime this still has me wondering a little at least.

I don't like Salesforce tower individually as a tower. Now that I think of it, it actually fits very well with the rest of our skyline as the centerpiece. I think thats one thing the planners got right.

Originally the Transbay tower had plans for wind turbines in the crown.. could that be what is in that rendering, which is several years old?

That rendering (with the X in the crown) is up to date and its whats on salesforce tower's website.

I just wish we had good renderings of what the 'art light installation' will really look like. Just a dimly lit white light on the crown or will it be something more impressive? (e.g. the bay bridge lights)

^^Judging by the rendering SFView posted, the thing you all are discussing appears to me to be a structure strengthening and stabilizing the "screen" panels. Which makes sense to me because I thought they would be rather flimsy before I saw this.

If we look at the crown model image I posted above, we can see what I think is blue LED strip tape attached to the panel framing. It looks as if LED's might be programmed with animated graphics, but I still have no confirmation of this. I tend to believe so, since this is intended as an art installation. I am hoping these would be color LED's, but again I don't yet know. White LED's would be okay, if the graphics are still good. It has been awhile since we have had any updates on the crown art, so it will be different from what we have seen so far. There could be internal illumination lighting as well.

I guarantee it will be capable of multiple colors. It has to be able to light up like a rainbow.

If all goes well, in about five years that picture will be graced with at least 10 new towers greater than 400' - currently in the planning, approval, or construction phases. In addition to the nearly complete Salesforce and 33 Tehama (not to mention the unseen 181 Fremont), waiting in the wings we have:

160 Folsom (Gang)
Park Tower
Transbay Block 4 (F4)
Oceanwide Tower 1
Oceanwide Tower 2
400 Folsom
500 Folsom
524 Howard
550 Howard (Parcel F)
555 Howard

And just to stay slightly on topic, I offer a picture of SF from yesterday

They started working on the enclosure around the lobby this morning.

Edit: I haven't seen this rendering before, that 'squares' wall they've built makes sense now.
