In general looks very desolate for usually-busy Downtown Santa Monica. What time of year were these taken? Looks like winter no?

I have never in my 55 years seen Santa Monica so empty, was this Christmas Day? Since the Expo Line opened, that train station has always been crowded every time I’m in the area, it looks so weird empty.

^ lol what time do you guys roll out of bed?

but seriously, yes it was a holiday — the day started very early saturday morning on easter weekend.

i actually came out the day before via the train from union station — i had lots of transit pics, but lost them due to photobucket problems unfortunately.

yes it did. i chillaxed for awhile on the roofdeck of this place below for lunch, had a celebrity sighting in there, demi moore & posse, haha, and got a little sunburned as it was day one of the visit.

Love me some Santa Monica! Spent the 4th of July through the following weekend there this year and really enjoyed it! (though the July 5 earthquake was unsettling as I was dining in downtown Santa Monica at the time and the building was really swaying back & forth).

you are in luck because a big part of the trip was touring modernist houses, so stay tuned for more los angeles neighborhood threads.

Nice shots of a favorite part of greater LA. I usually stay with friends in Pacific Palisades when I'm down there, so Santa Monica is like "going into town".

Those sculpted trees are indeed Ficus, the two most common varieties are Ficus microcarpa nitida and Ficus microcarpa retusa but both are often called Chinese banyan or Indian laurel fig.

Not really what I expected, in a good way. My only experiences of Southern California are of living briefly in Orange County and then visiting LA a few times (friends in Echo Park area). It put a bad taste in my mouth about the place for a long time, but I'm really wanting to go back and see the coastal stretch from Santa Monica on out to Santa Barbara. Thanks for the photo tour. I particularly appreciate some of the art deco gems.

I make that drive every Sunday and Monday, it is spectacular. It doesn't get old.

Ficus make great street trees, in most of the country they only know Ficus' as a houseplant...

Thank you for this collection, you covered a lot of ground in the city. Did you get to enter the case study house?

^ thank you -- and to answer your question there are separate and only occasional tours of the interior of the eames case study houses.

it's only 5 or 10 bucks to visit the grounds, you have to reserve well in advance, but it is highly recommended! however, unfortunately and as with many of the modernist los angeles homes, the interior tours are rare and very, very expensive.

in fact, you are not even allowed to take pics of the eames interiors, you have to take them from a distance (so the couple i have above are bootleg) --- i can understand that rule in part as aside from image rights they want to protect the glass windows from clinking camera scratches and slobber lol.
