Hamilton isn't even strongly connected to Burlington, let alone to Toronto or Waterloo.

Where Burlington residents worked in 2011:
1. Burlington 37.3%
2. Oakville 16.0%
3. Toronto 13.8%
4. Mississauga 13.3%
5. Hamilton 12.5%

Where Hamilton residents worked in 2011:
1. Hamilton 69.7%
2. Burlington 13.5%
3. Oakville 4.6%
4. Mississauga 4.6%
5. Toronto 4.5%

KWCG is the dark horse. KWCG population was 675,878 in 2016. Grew at 6.02%.

KCW is one place (sort of), G is another.

Where Guelph residents worked in 2011:
1. Guelph 68.8%
2. Waterloo Region 10.0%
3. Wellington County 5.3%
4. Peel Region 5.1%
5. Halton Region 4.7%

I think you can see why Guelph has its own CMA, separate from Waterloo Region.

I would not put Guelph in with KWC.

Although Winnipeg is growing at a decent clip, I still say Hamilton due to the Toronto overflow into Burlington. This will become even more pronounced as GO RER comes online.

I pass through and stop by Burlington at least once a month. And I used to live there a few years ago for 1.5 years. Come to think of it, I can't recall there being any new subdivisions under construction at the moment other than a small addition to an existing one at Walkers and Dundas. A couple of condos might be under construction right now that I can kind of picture in my mind. Though rapid development might be very well be in their master plan. There is plenty of room north of Dundas as you start to go up the Escarpment. And I know there are some more proposed condos DT.

Oakville OTH is chock full of new development along the north side of Dundas. But, of course, Oakville is not in Hamilton's CMA. Neither is Milton, which is also exploding with new subdivisions.

And can you see a day where StatsCan shifts Burlington from Hamilton's CMA and into Toronto's? And at the same time get rid of Oshawa's CMA status, which includes Whitby, and lump it in with TO? In Burlington's case, it seems funny because it's part of Halton Region with Oakville, Milton and Halton Hills yet it's in Hamilton's CMA, while the other cities are in Toronto's.

Anyway, if they did do that to Burlington, there would be even less a chance of Hamilton reaching that 1 mil mark.

And ya, I think Hamilton would remain as a CMA for at least a couple of decades before they even considered it as being in Toronto's. That's just my gut feeling.

It's already included for some planning purposes. Plus Kitchener is basically equidistant from Guelph and Cambridge.

One day, the great Grand River metropolitan area will come to fruition.

I might be wrong but I'm very sure that there's a greenbelt in between Guelph and KWC

Dougie might eliminate all them green belts for all we know!

Then get greased by developers and immediately mandate for mass development while cutting down as many trees as possible.

Isn't there some sliver of greenbelt in between St. Kitts & Niagara Falls? Maybe not, but the existence of a tract of greenbelt isn't dispositive to me.

The commuting numbers though are a more compelling argument against KWCG.

And Kitchener and Cambridge (Preston) abut each other.
