In the old days, many Europe - West coast flights used to stop for refueling in Winnipeg, so you'd have seen many more airlines in the airport back then. The most famous was the time that the plane carrying the Beatles stopped, creating pandemonium among the teenage girl population of the city.

Anyone have any concept pics of the soon to be expanded airport hotel?

I also believe someone said they were going to let us know is the new terminal aitport was to have a observayion gallery .. from where people could watch aircraft takeoff and land. I was also wondering how much retial will be included in the new terminal.

In short I am wondering if the layout is as amazing as the design. Winnipeg will have the most attractive airport in Canada by far thats for sure.

I occasionally have a few hours to kill in the YWG airport, so if nobody beats me to it, I will try to find out what I can and post it here.

New airport terminal construction to begin
FEB 21 2007 08:30 AM

If you've been to Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport lately, you probably noticed all the changes going on.

CEO of the Winnipeg Airports Authority Barry Rempel tells CJOB construction has entered an exciting new phase.

Rempel says they've just awarded the construction contract to a local company for work on the new terminal building.

EllisDon Construction/Manshield Construction Joint Venture will begin the work in early spring.

The first phase of the new terminal construction is slated for completion in 2009.

Winnipeg's airport was the third-fastest growing airport in Canada last year.

CJOB's Kacey Wilson reporting

1st in "pasinger" (as I don't know if the other airports in Canada have pasingers, but it may be different for "amarica")

3rd in passenger growth in Canada as a percentage.

Airport terminal work set to begin

Thu Feb 22 2007

By Geoff Kirbyson

CONSTRUCTION of the new terminal building at the Richardson International Airport is ready for takeoff.
Barry Rempel, CEO of the Winnipeg Airports Authority, confirmed Wednesday that the first phase of the $585-million redevelopment of the airport -- including a four-storey, 1,599-stall parkade, initial roadwork and land drainage for the site -- is complete.

He said the first thing people will notice in coming weeks is piles being driven into the ground just north of the new parkade for the 510,000-square-foot building.

The plan is to have most of the concrete and steel work done prior to next winter, he said.

"This phase is the most public and the most visible part of our redevelopment. It's really the heart of the airport campus. This is the piece most people think of when they think of an airport," he said in an interview.

Rempel said the plan calls for the WAA to be given the keys in time for a Dec. 1, 2009, opening. He said it will be an "overnight" move from one building to the other, unlike many other airport redesigns, but the date isn't firm.
"Do we want to open a building for operations exactly at the Christmas peak? We may pick another date. We'll look at it based on operations," he said.

After a competitive bidding process, construction work on the $300-million building was awarded to a joint venture between Winnipeg-based Man-Shield Construction and multi-national Ellis Don Corp.

Ted Nocita, CEO of Man-Shield, said at various points during the next two-and-a-half years, the biggest project in the company's history will require "hundreds" of workers at a time. Despite the ongoing shortage of labour in the province, he said he's not anticipating any problems getting the job done on time.

"This project has generated a great amount of interest. We're pleasantly surprised that a lot of people are calling us to be involved. I believe there will be people moving back from Alberta to our market (to work on it)," he said in an interview.

Rempel said there's no doubt the new terminal building will be needed to satisfy the demand from Winnipeg travellers. He said traffic has grown "considerably beyond expectations" over the last three years.

Forecasts had called for an annual growth rate of 2.7 per cent during the period, but they clocked in at 6.6 per cent instead.

The complete overhaul of Richardson International Airport is one of the biggest construction projects in Manitoba's history. Here's a look at what's coming up and what it means to the province's economy.

* Construction phase: Starting this month and finishing in late 2009.

* Scheduled opening date of the new terminal building: Dec. 1, 2009.

* The entire $585-million project will have provided 7,301 person-years of employment by the time it's done. * The total economic output, including wages and GDP, will be slightly more than $1 billion.

* It will be funded entirely through the WAA's Airport Improvement Fee.

Very nice multiplier level... lots of economic spin off.

I am in complete love with this project.

I believe there are 2-3 phases to this terminal project, and what you see is only phase one. The others will be built when passenger traffic dictates that further construction is needed.

You know, the one thing that pisses me off is how the media calls the airport "Winnipeg James Richardson International Airport", or "Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport." I mean for f**ks sakes, why not just call it "Winnipeg Richardson International Airport" or just simply "Richardson International Airport?" Whatever happened to the "Keep It Simple Stupid" method among those people? I mean if you media folks are "straight and to the point", then do it!

...sorry, that's the second, or third time today about my rantings around here. It's mid-term exam season, and I've been pretty edgy lately, so forgive me.
