Ya know, I'm really starting to see why you guys poke fun at Mississauga and it's future downtown now that I'm seeing the mall there. I don't know how to feel about it or what to really say. The first thing that wants to come out of my mouth is, 'They're planning their downtown around a mall?' I'm not even really sure why that seems like such a laughable idea, but for some reason it feels that way.

I'm soo used to seeing downtowns located to some sort of geographical feature like a river or something, or coastline, bluff, whatever it be. I guess Mississauga's really got nothing to work with so why not a mall?

Why not try and build it along the waterfront? They have what already resembles a downtown there...

Port credit isn't large enough to support the kind of development they seem to be going for. Plus the majority of the waterfront from Burlington through Oakville to Mississauga is large multimillion dollar homes which I would imagine would be impossible for the city to acquire.

The downtown by the lake is not large enough to handle the vehicular crush of cars that would come in for business/pleasure and commerce (mainly parking). The location in the photo above is right in the epicentre of the most massive highway system in the GTA 403/401/427/QEW/410/407. So for business, if not aesthetics, this is the place to put everything.

Sort of like Toronto's downtown then? Perhaps we should move our downtown to the intersection of the DVP and 401 because it's similarly highway deficient like Mississauga's lake front.

futrure

Sorry if you cant see the font/names of buildings...

first tower to the left is:

1.Tour Avenue des canadiens 62 floors 195m+
2.Bell centre office tower 27 floors 130m+
3.Altitude 33 floors 120m+
4.Altoria 32 floors 120m+
5.Place de la cite intertionale II 31 floors 130m+
6.Marriott Courtyard Hotel 40 floors 135m+
Funny how the skyline won't change that much, we're not so much getting a denser skyline, but a wider one still. The CF tower will simply extend the downtown westwards. To make Montreal's skyline a better one, we need more infill between le 1000 and complexe Desjardins. I reckon griffon town and prospective University-area developments will do that.

Yeah, only one of those towers is really noticeable, but it's a start.

Fair enough. I was just thinking a better urban environment would be a good start as opposed to a suburban mall. lol

Most of the proposals will be more than noticeable, this is just not the best angle to notice the change.

It was also a consideration that they didn't want to ruin what was essentially the downtown of a smallish town (Port Credit) with development appropriate for a city of 600,000. There are some newer developments in the area just not on the same scale as around Square One.

It does seem odd and somewhat inappropriate to build a new "downtown" around a mall, but taken in context it does sort of make sense.

Not being familiar with Montreal, that rendering is all I have to go by, I'm sure other angles will show it better. Anyway, glad to see Montreal join the party!

^That's true. Funny how Montreal's most cliched vantage point is also the only one where one cannot see the 3rd tallest building. Thinking about it, for the 23 years the Tour de la Bourse was the tallest building in the city, it was never seen from the lookout!

Great rendering. If you added just a bit of warming filter to the Cadillac-Fairview tower it would look even more real.
