The Royal Bank was originally founded as the Merchants' Bank of Halifax in the 1860's. The 1960's-era Royal Bank tower in Halifax was built on the site of the older Victorian offices:

There was recently an announcement that the Royal Bank is moving into a new building in Halifax called RBC Waterside Centre. This is the construction site. The "striped" highrise on the right is the old Royal Bank building:
