I like to note that more then anything the fact Saskatchewan can support a team is solely based on its people. The community support is what drives this team and makes it able for the teams' existence in a smaller populated area.

Judge Allows sale
PONTIAC, Mich - A judge has rejected a request to block a US$583,000 sale of the 80,300-seat Pontiac Silverdome to a Canadian company. The former home to the Detroit Lions and Detroit Pistons was built in 1975 for $56 million, or about $220 million today. Pope John Paul II, Michael Jackson and the Rolling Stones all appeared as the venue. Some residents of the suburban Pontiac sued to block the sale to Toronto-based Triple Properties Inc., which plans to use it for sports events.

There must be a valid reason as to why the price is so low. Example could be in need of major repairs not visible. Who knows but for 80,300 seat stadium thats a steal.

I read in an article somewhere it had to do with the fact it was a blind bid, detroit economy, the fact it might be difficult to fill for events...

Apparently the owner said he has enough cashflow to keep it afloat (prop taxes & bills) for a few years, before he'll need events to keep the business going....

I believe it was a Globe & Mail article a few weeks ago...

BC Lions Empire Field 2010

Lions to play outdoors in 2010

CFL.ca Staff

VANCOUVER – The wait is over for the BC Lions Football Club and its fans as the BC Pavilion Corporation (PAVCO) along with officials from the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) announced today that a temporary stadium will be constructed on the grounds of Empire Fields.

“We are very excited about today’s announcement and it’s an early Christmas gift for our fans,” said Lions vice president, business, George Chayka. “We have a tremendous opportunity in 2010 to provide our fans with a season to remember as we return to the birthplace of Lions football for the first time in 27 years.”

The one-year move to Empire Fields became necessary following PAVCO’s announcement earlier this year that construction on a new retractable roof for BC Place would not be completed until July 2011. The BC Lions will host the 99th Grey Cup at BC Place in November 2011.

“After one look at the conceptual drawings I believe our fans will be very impressed with what we have in store next year,” added Chayka.

Completely enclosed on all four sides with an approximate seating capacity of 27,500, the new Lions’ den will be a cozy fit for fans. Individual seats totaling 20,100 will run along the side lines and another 7,400 bench-style seats will occupy the end zones. Sideline seats between the goal lines will be covered and a limited number of private boxes will also be constructed along with media facilities, concessions, stadium level lighting, scoreboards, a video board and washrooms.

Quick Facts:

• Location: Empire Fields at the PNE, previous site of Empire Stadium

• Seating capacity: 27,500 seats - sideline seats will be covered

• Number of private boxes: 12

• Cost: $14 million covered by PAVCO’s operational budget

• Builder: Nussli

• Construction period: Approximately 10 weeks

• Number of seating technicians required to build stadium: 50-60

• Stadium lighting will allow games to be played at night

For a temporary stadium, thats still impressive. Though, I'm still holding out hope that it becomes a more permanent stadium.

Fourteen million for that that is pretty impressive. Yet only temporary. Second BC/Vancouver team? hmmm haha

edit.

If they can build that for $14 Million I am sure other places that wish to have a CFL team can follow up on that cost.

The big reason for the low cost is the reusing of Olympic bleachers from events at Cypress and Whistler.

A second Vancouver/BC CFL team? Hmmm maybe...permanent home for the Whitecaps perhaps??
