Once in a Lifetime

Idaho stargazers prepare for first total solar eclipse in 99 years

Quote:
Two minutes. That's how long this summer's total eclipse—the first since 1918—is expected to last. The rarity of the Monday, Aug. 21, event is expected to attract thousands of visitors to Idaho, which is in the direct path of the eclipse.
Quote:
Idaho is a great place [to see ] this year's eclipse because we're on the line of totality and the skies are great. There's nothing that's going to get in the way," said Dull.
Quote:
Most campsites, hotels and motels across the line of totality in Idaho's path are already fully booked. Like most other cities and towns, places like Idaho Falls, Driggs, Stanley, Sun Valley and Weiser are already near capacity.
Quote:
"Even though Boise is not in the line of totality, we're still going to get over 90 percent of the sun blocked off during about a two-minute period as the eclipse is occurring," said Dull. "So yes, Boise is still a good place to see the eclipse."

I am going to have to visit Mixed Greens soon.

Oh yes, this is going to be a marvelous whitewater year. It is time to book a float for the canyon section of the South Fork of the Payette. Any bets on when the Boise will open for the floating season through town? Labor Day?

Downtown 2017: 5 of the best experiences on Twin Falls' Main Avenue

Quote:
TWIN FALLS — Old-timers recall downtown’s long-gone department stores, and consultants envision the vibrant mixed-use destination Twin Falls’ historical district could become.

As the city prepares to launch a $17.2 million revitalization, downtown is an emotional center for both the city’s nostalgia and its dreams.

This year, the city and its Urban Renewal Agency will do four major projects in the heart of downtown: a $6.4 million reconstruction of Main Avenue, a $1.3 million public plaza with restrooms, and a $9.5 million public safety complex and new City Hall.

Climbing gym nears completion

Quote:
TWIN FALLS — The past eight months have been a test of patience for Hailey Barnes and Don Campbell.

Their dream of opening a rock climbing gym in downtown Twin Falls has been met with delay after delay throughout the construction period: The steel manufacturer made an error on the drawings. Contractors found 1,000 cubic yards of concrete debris when they began excavating footings in September. And winter weather set the project back two months.

The glittering diamonds of the Milky Way over the Sawtooth National Recreation Area will be preserved for future stargazers, as the International Dark-Sky Association on Monday approved the nation’s first dark sky reserve.

The 1,416-square-mile reserve also includes the communities of Stanley, Ketchum and Sun Valley. It is the 12th such reserve worldwide, and the third largest.

The Historic Ballroom and the next-door building are pictured July 23, 2013. The Urban Renewal Agency is being asked to spend $350,000 to fill in basements beneath the sidewalk of Shoshone Street North and make other improvements. The smaller building would be demolished for patio seating.
