surely that's a mistake.

Hey guys!

I hope this is the right thread...since it was just titled Montreal, I figured I'd ask the most people I could...

So, i'm planning to be in Montreal next summer for ~ 1 month, 4 weeks.

I have a student budget and I know Montreal is a really affordable city (from the statistics anyways; it seems to be very student friendly), I have been there this summer and love it. I am moving for some networking in addition to French immersion.

I am just wondering what's a good area for student housing? I keep seeing McGill pop up; how is this in your minds?

My stay was very short in Montreal but I luckily saw much of the city in such a short time thanks to some awesome friends. I am wondering what it is like; safety wise, culturally, etc...

I am coming from Winnipeg where downtown can be pretty rough depending on where you are.

Any suggestions? Tips?

Thanks a ton guys, appreciate it

^NDG is student heaven. Everywhere else is squalor or seriously expensive (mcgill ghetto). there is also the concordia ghetto, Cote des neiges, and verdun. Mile end, and the plateau are wonderful but pricey.

You mean Notre Damme? In the west side of downtown?

How far is that roughly from all the action?

(Thanks for the heads up by the way!)

I used to live in NDG, before moving to Deadmonton. I could get from my door (five minutes walk to Vendome station), to Concordia in about 20 minutes during rush hour, outside just a bit more, if you're driving, its about 5 minutes, or a 10-15$ cab ride

I used to live right in between Côte-des-Neiges and NDG, close to the Snowdon metro station. I highly recommend it if you can find a place that suits your budget -- it's very urban yet has a great neighbourhood vibe, and you can reach pretty much anywhere you'd likely want to be within 30 minutes by bus or metro (2 lines).
Generally speaking MolsonEx was spot on, Côte-des-Neiges-NDG is probably your best bet.

^hey, maybe we were almost neighbors. I lived at chemin cote-st. luc and Victoria for 5 years (2000-2005); just behind the Shell Gas Station and across from the old Westmound fire hall. Great location; adjacent to 4 metro stations (Vendome, Villa Maria, Snowdon, Cote-des-Neiges). Great for university access (all 4 within walking distance...albeit a long walk!). I studied at McGill/Concordia, and taught at Concordia/UofMontreal.

Close! I was at Clanranald and Queen-Mary, although I moved in in the summer of 2005, I guess around the time you must have moved out. University access is actually why I picked the area -- I was a student at HEC (UdeM) back then.

I'm quite probably moving back to Mtl in a couple of years, and I have to admit I'm having a hard time picturing living anywhere else... it's just an amazing neighbourhood. The only serious contender so far would be Little Italy I think.

^ that's the one.

I lived a step away from there on Queen-Mary and Earnscliffe in 06-07, in the very tall building.

Cool, we were neighbours then.
I always wondered what it was like inside? From the street it sure looks like it's seen better days, and quite a few units have tinfoil all over the windows... not exactly the most engaging first impression.
The view must be pretty unique though if you're high enough and facing south.
