Now, this I like. More of this, please. (My first look at a residential tower on site by SOM)

I'm pleasantly surprised. I would have thought the residential tower would be substantially shorter.

It's tall, but it doesn't mesh well with the nearby towers, at all.

Well, from that angle it looks tall because nothing else is around it. It won't be taller than the office towers.

As far as the design goes, I love it. The fact that it doesn't blend in with everything going up around it is part of that. We need variety on the west side. Everything can't be blue glass. Now we need to see what the design for 360 10th Ave looks like, that will be close as well. You can see proximity on the model below...

This will probably be the first to get built at Manhattan West.

I must say that I'm really pleased by this design, it's got the height it needs to be visible and the colour to stand out from all the blue glass that's going to go up on the west side..
My only minor complaint would be that it doesn't seem to have any kind of detailing, although I'm certain that better renderings will reveal something that the current ones don't.

As for the office towers, I'm thinking that they too will get redesigned when their time draws nearer.

That is more appropriate for a button down Park Ave address. I expected to see more flair for something near the Highline.

New York YIMBY:

Revealed: Brookfield’s Residential Tower at Manhattan West
BY: NIKOLAI FEDAK ON JANUARY 21ST 2014 AT 7:30 AM

Manhattan West, with residential tower -- image via SOM

Quote:
Brookfield has released the first rendering of its residential tower that will rise as part of Manhattan West, and — more than anything else — it looks tall. [B]While no height figures have been revealed, Brookfield had previously stated the building would rise over 60 floors; (edit out) as-depicted, the skyscraper could verge on ‘supertall’ status, as a floor count indicates it will stand over 80 stories.

SOM appears to be the architect of record, and the design is definitely different from other projects currently underway in the Hudson Yards. Given that Related’s project has seen several major revisions as it has come closer to realization, changes are also possible at Manhattan West — though, of the site’s components, plans for the residential tower definitely appear to be furthest along. The image comes on the heels of additional reveals spotted by Curbed, earlier this month.

SOM’s reveal is hopefully a signal that the commercial towers remain closer to massing models than actual designs. The two office giants will be vast, but current plans are for relatively plain glass boxes — and given Brookfield’s competition across 10th Avenue, a stellar design would seem to be warranted.

...afterwards, in 2015, the actual towers will rise. With the potential for three supertalls looking likely, the site’s future impact on the skyline looks more impressive than ever.

I counted around 80 floors, then the crown on top. Counted the double mechanical levels as 1 floor. So marketing would say more like 85 floors.

I like this one a lot, it's exactly how I feel skyscrapers should be. Is it a skyline definer? No, and it's not supposed to be. It brings an air of stability to an unknown part of Manhattan, where Related will be experimenting with different designs.

Looks boring and bland. The coloring doesn't mesh with the area or me.

Oh well, there will be so many tall buildings in the area that it won't matter.

I like it. It's a nice refreshing break from all the blue glass angled designs.

Unhappy

Oh good... midtown will finally get that boxy, featureless building we've all been dreaming about.

Nothing exciting there. Another potential supertall, but again we got quite a few of those rising already.
But glad to see something might be off the ground sooner than expected on that site.

Yes, it is a nice, crisp design, exactly as a skyscraper should be. I'm not sure about the height, but it would be a major development in some cities either way. I want more details, and I hope they stick with this.

My guess is between 850 and 1050 feet.

Not bad. I just hope that commercial buildings are good and that somehow fits with the residential.
