NHL attendance is always something I pay attention to. Cheering for a small market Canadian team in the middle of a rebuild I always worry that the fans won't support our boys. It's interesting, though, how quickly the Habs and Flames fans turn on their team in tough times. I thought Ottawa was bad for this. Some surprising numbers (to me) coming out of the first few games of the season (sorry about the formatting....or lack there of):

Team Games Played Average Home Attendance % Capacity

TOR 5 19442 103.3
VAN 5 18860 102.4
OTT 5 18707 97.7
MON 6 17727 83.3
EDM 6 16839 100
CAL 5 15431 80
WIN 4 15004 100

from http://espn.go.com/nhl/attendance

Was at the Flames game last night, they absolutely dominated Colorado in the first period, out shot them 21-5, but somehow ended up getting out shot by the end of the game. Luckily they managed to hold on for the win.

Good on Horak for his first NHL goal.

When your team is playing like shit, spending big money to go to the games isn't as appealing I guess. Was at the Dome last night and it didn't seem like there were very many empty seats...

Not entirely sure, to be honest. I can't think of any modern arena built entirely with private funding. Naming rights might bring in a whopping $5 million a year, that's not enough to construct a $250-300 million arena.

OK, ESPN is completely fucked up. If you look game-by-game, they show a 100% sellout. For all 5 home games. So that 80% is complete nonsense.

While there are beginning to regularly be empty seats in the nosebleeds, and there have always been scattered lower bowl vacancies, the games are being reported as sellouts still. Most of the 'Dome (close to 90%) is season tickets and we still have a years-long waiting list. There's just no way nearly 4000 seats on average are sitting empty.

I wouldn't be surprised if it happens though. "Fans quickly turning on the team" - um, has anyone actually been paying attention to this team post-lockout? 4 embarrassing first round knockouts, followed by missing the post-season 2 years in a row. Sure, we're not Toronto - but Calgary hasn't exactly been playing to attract fans lately.

Edit: just did the same for Montreal. They also claim full sellouts each game, but 83% overall? Something ain't right.

Newspapers generally have the attendance numbers for each game.

True, although at 16 years old it's almost to the point where I wasn't considering it in terms of "modern". But I'll give you that one.

No way could you build something like that for $160 million today.

Why standings mean absolute squat this early in the season:

Calgary, tied for 14th in the West, is only 2 points out of a playoff spot.

The West was like that after 60 games last season.

Yeah, but the top team didn't have twice as many points at 14th.

lol, that's the only place I can think of that actually shows attendance figures. They don't show it on the online version though...

I'd LOVE to see them sneak out a win. We had some fairly surprising upsets last night and I like trends like that. Keeps things interesting.

Now that the Caps have an actual goaltender, I think they're the team to beat this year.

Jets over Flyers 9 to 8.

Seventeen goals!

The most rediculous hockey game I have ever seen in my life!
