What a gorgeous parking garage! Its rare that such a beastly land use can be so beautiful. Makes me wish they never tore down that monster that was on Wacker a long time ago.

Modern, Green US-Canada Border Crossing by Julie Snow Architects
by Bridgette Meinhold, 02/28/11

One may not think 'sustainability' when imagining a border crossing, but as the first point of entry into the US from Canada through Minnesota, we think there's a poetic quality to the notion. The Warroad Land Port of Entry by Minneapolis-based Julie Snow Architects is completely clad in sustainably harvested wood, features daylighting, geothermal heating and cooling, rainwater collection and more. Currently awaiting LEED Silver certification, the Port of Entry stands as impressive welcome point from the north into the US.

You are missing the fact that all the buildings you see in Google maps are actually connected together by underground areas (not just tunnels, but entire swaths of assembly lines) and above ground passage ways. I see it being at least 4000' long on Google Maps and read somewhere about the mile + figure.

Santa Monica Civic Center Parking Structure, Santa Monica, California, United States
Innovative design transforms utilitarian building into civic symbol and certified sustainable structure

The design of the 300,000 sq ft parking structure establishes a strong presence within a cluster of prominent buildings in Santa Monica's Civic Center. The project also exemplifies the city's commitment to sustainable design whilst strengthening the urban fabric and providing public amenities.

Completed in June 2007, one of the challenges was to create architecture out of a common building type — one that is not generally associated with high design standards. The design transforms this standard service amenity by viewing it from a fresh perspective and taking it to a higher level where it can have a positive influence on its surroundings.

It is somewhere between 3000' and 4000' according to google maps. You might get 4000' if you add that eastern parking lot. Either way, it is not over a mile long. Maybe the campus is a mile long, but no way the building is. You might be thinking of the Boeing factory. Actually, I just checked Google Earth, and it is 0.64 miles long. The campus is 1.3 by 1.1 miles.

To compare it to another world head quarters, the Chrysler WHQ and tech building in Auburn Hills Michigan is 0.50 miles in diameter.

atelier haretoke: workshop in the forest

japanese architecture practice atelier haretoke has shared with us images of 'workshop in the forest', a small single-level carpentry facility in the woods of tama mountain, tokyo, japan. given the nature of the principal program coupled with the lushness of the plot, the design revolves around the theme, 'building with wood of this site, in itself', seeking to find balance and relevance with the structure's environment.

Challenged with a highly innovative plant, combining scientific research and modern production of concrete on an international standard, Synarchitects have been asking themselves to not only provide all tasks, but to add something special that makes the Xinao Concrete Research Plant shine out the typical factories.

I'm surprised this hasn't been posted yet. It's an interesting structure, but a horrible bus terminal.

The interesting thing about that design is that Soane should get at least a little credit for it too:

Molehill on a Mountain: Sustainable Retreat Hits the Slopes

If you can manage to get to it, this mountain retreat offers stunning views and many of the comforts of home…but it does so from its rather precarious-looking perch high up in the Alps. The tubular mountain survival lodge was fabricated off-site and airlifted into its place on the mountain by helicopters.

x-studio: inner forest pine cone landscape pavilion

mexican architect iván juárez of x-studio has collaborated with the nordic artists centre at dalsåsen and the norwegian ministry of culture to create structure from pine cones in a forest in norway. the natural material was chosen for its symbolic connection to the surrounding area, collected from the forest floor and carefully stacked to make an enclosure. the pavilion wraps the viewer in the textures of the woods while directing the view upward through the canopy to the open sky. the piece reflects the process of creation, in which the architect walked through the groves, selecting thousands of cones to make a hand-made natural skin.
