From Moscow to Beijing by train. Part Two : Across Siberia

So here is the second thread where I post some of the pics that I took during the transcontinental trip I did last summer.
As a reminder, the link to the first thread about Moscow :http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/newt...ewthread&f=321

The train journey from Moscow to Irkoutsk lasted four nights and three days. It was very strange because as we went on towards east, we crossed five time zones, so each day, we changed of time zone. Nevertheless, in the train and in the stations all along the Transsiberian, the time is always fixed on Moscow.

The train left Moscow at night (at about 01:00AM).
After a terrible first night in the train, I woke up and all I could see was... forests. Birch forests :
1-

2- Forests !

3- And some other trains :

4-

5-

6- My room for four nights. I shared it with a French-Swiss man and a Russian family. I slept on the top left bed.

7-Vladislav, my russian roommate, showing me his dinner :

8- Outskirts of Perm :

9- Night is falling on our first day in the Transsiberian. Here is the Kama river :

10- Stopping at Perm :

11- A dog (sabaka) in the Perm train station :

12- Our Provodnitsa :

13-

14- Second day in the train. We've crossed the Oural muntains during the night. We're officially in ASIA !!!!!!!!

15- First impression of Siberia behind the dirty windows of the train :

16-

17- Skies of Siberia :

18-

19-

20-

21- Arriving at Omsk :

22- Crossing the Irtych river :

23-

24-

25-

26- Along the transsiberian we see a lot of industrial buildings or huge silos which seem more or less abandoned :

27- The vast emptiness of the siberian prairies :

28- Houses :

29-

30-

31- Stopping at Novossibirsk in the middle of the night, after nine vodkas. We were not very clear anymore...

32- Third day on the train :

33-

34-

35- Arriving at Krasnoyarsk :

36-

37- Me, taking the pose at Krasnoyarsk :

38- Our train :

39-

40-

41-

42-

43- Leaving Krasnoyarsk... it's raining !

44-

45-

46- Blue sky is back !

47- Another stop in some city of Siberia... here are russian militaries :

48-Buying some food for the end of the journey :

49-

50- Another stop again... in the middle of our last night in the train before Irkoutsk

51- Fourth day in the train, we're approaching Irkoutsk :

52-

53- Irkoutsk train station :

54-

55-

56- Welcome to Russia !

Next step : Irkoutsk and the Baikal lake !

Some day, some day. I'm very jealous, nice pictures. If you have a clearer, or larger, one of that train engine I could read the sign and let you know what it was. I'm kind of curious.

I'm curious about the guys in camouflage in #55 ... Homeless? Poachers or hunters? Just your normal everyday folk headed out into the forest to gather mushrooms? Fascinating.

That's what I was thinking. All that open countryside but sharing such a small space with several others.

Very nice tour, I lingered over these pics for quite a while. Thanks!

Nice trip but IMO you can't see too much in a train trip. Especially in the former Eastern Block the trains pass through ugly areas and the train stations are the worst places in a city. At least that was my conclusion after some trips in Romania, Bulgaria and Poland (the best places there were far away from the rails and train stations)

Then just do it !
I remember last April I was wondering what I would do during the summer. Then I thought "Hey why not cross Eurasia ?"... and three months later I was in the Transsiberian.
And I don't regret it !

I will post more pics of the trains in the Part Four thread (about Mongolia).
About the guys in camouflage... well I can't answer your questions.

Yeah the room seems so small at first sight ! But along the journey, you become used to it.
And, you don't have to stay in the room all the day. You can move in the train, go visit your "neighbors" in the other compartments, go eat some overpriced food and drink some cheap (but bad) vodka in the restaurant car.
Moreover the train stops several times a day. The stops last from 2 minutes up to 30 minutes... so you can walk around during these stops. There are always women who sell some food to the passengers in the train stations.

Coming next :
Part Three : Baikal lake and Irkoutsk.
Part Four : Mongolia, Ulan Bator and the Gobi desert.
Part Five : China.

These are great. Probably the most fascinating journey to ever be documented on SSP City photos.
