Can someone please educate me on why it is alright to gamble on Indian Reservations and nowhere else?

ps. Before I die I am putting a casino in Bienville square or on the river with walkways connecting to the hotels. All of this, of course, comes after I win Powerball.

If it weren't for the fact that some combination of policies/events/isolation/self-esteem/personal responsibility problems have almost destroyed all Indian reservation peoples in ways that make African American neighborhoods look like Mcmansion Boulevards...I'd bitch more about this situation. But the truth is, if you wanna fight about it, these folks have actually played pretty nice compared to what they could've tried to do on their own (given) land, defined by us, all these years. Not many Bunny Ranches that I know of. No Al Qaeda training grounds. Few Cocaine farms. Most importantly, no mime schools!...Ever!

I sorta think they should do what they want with their land at this point. They've proven not to be too crazy even when desperate.

We all know he didn't mean anything bad. Indian reservation living conditions are horrible and have the highest poverty rates out of any group in America.

Basically a Federally recognized tribe can operate gaming facilities at the highest "level" allowed by the state in which they're located.
So, when places like Greenetrack were allowed to operate "electronic bingo" machines, it became fair game for the Poarch Creeks to do likewise.

Keep in mind that most of the large populations living on reservations are in the western half the country. Most of the Poarch Creeks do not live on the little reservation near Atmore.

That's what should have been said then, not making a comparison with a specific nationality that doesn't make one seem better than the other.

I gotcha. I thought it was state law which is why I was wondering, but common sense should have told kicked in.

I wondered about this too, but from the other perspective - if it's "their" land, why does Alabama get to tell them what they can do on it? So I googled. From Infoplease:

Indian Gaming Regulations. Indian land is not under state law unless a federal law places it under state law. The Supreme Court held that even if a tribe is under state law the state gaming regulations do not apply on Indian trust land. In 1988 Congress passed the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act. This law allows traditional Indian gaming as well as bingo, pull tabs, lotto, punch boards, tip jars, and certain card games on tribal land. However, it requires a tribal/state compact for other forms of gaming such as cards or slot machines. Today there are about 145 tribal-state gaming compacts. Nearly 130 tribes in 24 states are involved in some kind of gaming. The National Indian Gaming Commission was established by Congress to develop regulations for Indian gaming.

What are you doing over there? Are there any juicy rumors you can convey?

Also: any updates on the Hampton Inn on Royal construction?

Cool man.

Be sure to eavesdrop on important conversations as I've been needing a fix since being out of town for two months now.

I read in Sundays paper in the real estate section it mentined about a 77 unit condos that will be built in that huge lot of land on Dauphin street. Which is a across the street from that strip mall with Gold GYM. I use to always wonder why this huge peace of land hjas been vacant for so long, but now they are building condo units that will range from 199,000 - 270,000 $. They aslo will be building a grocerry store there (I hope a Publix or whole foods) and a drug store as well.

Home prices are falling across much of the country, but Mobile saw a 1.63 percent increase in home values in the first quarter of 2008, according to a report issued Thursday.

Over the last year, house prices are up more than 6.7 percent in Mobile County, making the city among the nation's top 10 metropolitan areas in terms of price appreciation, according to the Office of Federal Housing Enterprise Oversight in Washington, D.C. http://www.al.com/news/press-registe...370.xml&coll=3

I assume thats a sign of growth !

^Our market isn't big nor affluent enough for a Whole Foods. More than likely, if there is going to be a grocery component, it will probably be a Publix supermarket.

A friend of mine was bubbling over with the rumor that it was indeed a Whole Foods planned for this development. But I agree with NitekKetin, there's no way WF would invest here. Maybe one of those Wal-Mart "neighborhood" things? Esp. since the one on Government got nixed (just heard about that this afternoon). Seems like Wally World's Plan B is to pop them li'l (relatively speaking) grocery stores anywhere they think there might be somebody other than them making money.

With a supercenter in such close proximity behind Springdale Plaza, I doubt WalMart could operate a successful store in this location. That's also one of the reasons they pulled out of that proposed Highway 90 supercenter.

Since my camera was submerged in beer recently, I've been unable to snap some shots of the Hampton Inn construction. I was downtown last week and saw that it was close to its planned height if it is not already there. Looks good coming down Royal!

AmSouth Tower sale info from Press-Register:

http://www.al.com/business/press-reg...500.xml&coll=3

Good to hear a claim that there are some interested tenants too.

Sounds like the interested party is planning to fix it up but I'm not sure how far they are willing to go. "Sprucing up" doesn't sound too major, and saying they will fix it up once they get the tenant level back up seems backwards.
