A rendering apparently of the new Nashville Virgin Hotel was posted on the Virgin Hotel website (no link, but be careful how you frame your search) without fanfare or publicity. The site said it would open in 2019 per local news reports. The orange card is my design.

Also, some site prep is underway on the 16 story, W Hotel site in the Gulch. Excavation and core drilling have been observed. However, no final renderings or details have been announced. A massing diagram presented some time ago for City approvals.....

And a more polished and detailed partial rendering from the same time frame...

This crude graphic I prepared might give some info as to how it will fit in the Gulch...along with the 40 story Buckingham proposal (gold).

A 12 story hotel (brand not revealed) will be built at 29th and Poston, a half block off West End just west of Centennial Park. No start or finish dates released.
This rendering is one of the hotel captured from a crude massing diagram that was submitted and placed by myself on a more detailed Google Earth background. More information and original renderings can be found in the Nashville Business Journal.

I would suspect it will be 25-35 stories tall. The JW Marriott under construction will be 532 rooms and 32 stories tall. It really depends on how much of the lot includes the structure that the LifeWay Tower sits atop. The site for the retail store is actually pretty small, so I have to wonder if the property includes the structure that the building behind it with the garage deck on top and the tower are included in the Hyatt deal. If it includes that property then we may see more of a mid-rise hotel of 10-20 stories.

There are reports of the City's plan to make lower Broad more pedestrian friendly. The current state of affairs looks like this...and this...is a normal Saturday morning; no events in the stadium or arena, no concerts or award shows!!! Just tourists! The other side of the street looks exactly the same.

The plan (I will include diagrams as soon as I can acquire some) involves ....
  1. widening sidewalks
  2. eliminating on street parking
  3. landscaping of sidewalks
  4. installation of strategically placed planters to discourage mid-block crossing
  5. installation of landscaped median barriers between 7th and 5th on Broadway

EDIT!

Watch on YouTube.

Edit: Ok, spam is gone.

Here's what will probably be the next big project to break ground in Nashville..a 16 story, Hilton Curio Hotel and a 22 story residential tower at 19th and Broadway, 1/2 block off West end.

It was scheduled to break ground in July. There is no reason it won't happen soon, anyway.

The next phase of the 33 acre, Capital View Development, a couple of blocks from the State Capital, is seeking approval of a few minor variances to it's original plan.

From the Tennessean...

Quote:
The development plans for that block show 24,000 square feet of retail in an 868,000-square-foot multitenant project that also will support about 170 hotel rooms, 319,000 square feet of office space plus support spaces and 1,611 parking spaces.
Three of the newest renderings...

The 16 story, 257' HCA Parrallon Division HQ is to the right and will open in 10 days. The Lifeway HQ on the far left is under early phases of construction.

Another aerial view, looking north..

And a street view of the hotel...

I don't dislike the Capitol View Development. But I just wish it didn't look so much like an office park. I don't get why all the buildings have to follow a similar style. That's not how an area within the CBD should be developed. Allow for more creativity in design within the constraints of scale. Hopefully the actually structures will be different than the proposed renderings of the development.

I think that without the context of its surroundings I would agree with you, but given its location I just think of it as a more modern extension of the style of other buildings in the neighborhood, like Marathon Village.

Two more hotels proposed for the Music City (Convention) Center District....a 400 room, 16 story Embassy Suites and a 200 room, 12 story, as yet unbranded hotel on adjacent lots on the NE corner of Rosa Parks Ave. with Korean Veterans Blvd.

One recent survey listed Nashville as having the highest hotel average room rates in the US, so the demand is obviously there.

A diagram showing only hotels in immediate proximity to the MCC. There is also a 16 story Five Star Hotel planned for the NCI development at 1st and Demonbruen and a 500 room Hyatt Regency (30+ floors?) planned for 10th and Broadway about four blocks away.

The demand does seem to be there. However, downtown Nashville has to be careful and ensure that it doesn't get over saturated with hotels. Additionally, they need to ensure that it remains affordable for tourist who are not in town for a convention. Downtown Nashville is where most tourist spend their time. Nashville is not NYC or LA. It's not even New Orleans. So, it really needs to watch the rising hotel costs.

I wish some of those hotels were being built south of the MCC. That is still the area of SoBro that needs a major face lift. I know it's coming, but the market is going to slow down eventually. I also wonder how many of the hotels are rethinking their decisions back when they were reluctant about building anything bigger than they have on the table. Omni, Westin and now the JW Marriott all should have been thinking 45 stories and taller. As the first hotel to support the MCC, the Omni should have been at least 35 stories. I bet they are kicking themselves in the butt for being so conservative. Eventually they will be blocked by other buildings going up around it.

I also think that Nashville should take a theme from Las Vegas and establish entertainment venues with long term shows. Yes the hotels in Vegas rely heavily on their Casinos. But, when I was there is seemed they also relied heavily on the shows along the strip. Nashville can't do casinos right now, but it would be great if they had hotels with theaters that could host an artist for 6-12 months at a time just as they do in Vegas. That would be a great way to increase tourism year round and not just convention attendees.
