Popeye's? I like Popeye's, but I wouldn't care if that building got torn down.

Now, Mrs Johnson's Donuts? I'd rather keep the old building. It's also too bad that the old Holiday House became a Chevron. Burger Tex is another I wouldn't want to see gone, but they could probably move into a new building.

There are plenty of businesses on Airport I'd like to save before Popeye's such as Quality Seafood, The Tamale House, Burger Tex and I Love Video to name just a few. Besides the only Popeye's I can think of on Airport is on the corner of Airport and MLK which isn't even part of this phase of redevelopment.

There's a lot of good places to eat along there. We usually end up at Jalapeno Joe's after trips to our vet, which is just east of Airport at 51st Street.

That there are some business we all love and appreciate, almost all (all?) are set behind parking lots, and located one of the most gruesome stretches of road in all of Texas. While I love me some Quality Seafood etc, Airport is a place I only drive to, usually avoid if at all possible and would never voluntarily walk on. It remains completely hostile to pedestrians.

A sidewalk and some shade trees isn't going to change that.

Yeah, Banana Bay. Didn't know if anyone would recognize the name, so I stayed generic.

New signage up at the Stallion Grill on Airport. Lots of film trucks and cranes around, looks like Tarantino is filming a movie.

Took a look around this weekend and realized when you consider not just the mall and surrounding parking lots but also all the super low intensity (blighted really) land surrounding highland mall with a ton underperforming asphalt and the redevelopment potential of this area starts to look more and more interesting. The time horizon is a bit further out than a place like Mueller, but between the location (proximity to center city and major freeways), favorable zoning, and existing and proposed transit and the commitment of ACC and this could be a pretty big play in the 10 yr time horizon. Worth keeping this on the radar.

Shot in the dark here, but does anyone know if the University of Texas has any plans to either redevelop or sell the Highland Village shopping center on Airport and Lamar (across from Crestview Station)?

6929 Airport Blvd (ID#232326)

It's a huge mostly empty shopping center that seems ripe for something. I just wonder if the University would let it sit that way for a decade while it holds onto it for "future considerations"

Possibly a good spot for the relocation of the CapMetro North Lamar transit center (which they've tossed around as an idea a few times).

This has been listed on the ATX Development Map since last June but I haven't heard anything about it anywhere else.

This is the original plan from ACC & Redleaf Development. It was part of a Statesman article back in August 2011. The link is the cached version because the Statesman site's search function is 505-ing at the moment.

Wow! That would be a really positive outcome for that area. That place is blighted by surface parking lots that seem to stretch for miles right now. It would be incredibly good for The Marchesa theater which is run by the Austin Film Society and located in the Lincoln Village shopping center. Really great indie/art house theater. Anybody here been there yet? I desperately want it to thrive but it needs that area to start doing well. Lots of students living and going to school around there would/will be a huge boost.

I didn't realize that ACC was going to purchase the entirety of Highland Mall, though. That's really cool. This area was my stomping grounds growing up so it makes me kind of emotional to see it changing for the better. North Austin 4 lyfe!

Seriously, get over to The Marchesa if you haven't yet.

ACC to potentially partner with tech company at old Highland Mall
by Joe Lanane July 8, 2014

The first public-private partnership in Austin Community College history took a first step forward July 7.

Rackspace Hosting, a cloud management technology company, could soon move into the old Dillard’s space in Highland Mall, pending negotiations between ACC and Austin-based development team Live Oak-Gottesman. If the deal is successful, Rackspace intends to relocate 570 employees to the new Highland campus by late 2015, according to ACC.
ACC board members voted to authorize negotiations during their July 7 board meeting after receiving two proposals for repurposing the four-story, 194,000-square-foot former Dillard’s location.

Highland Apartments - 6-story building. It faces Airport Boulevard.

The elevations are on page 30.
