My apologies, but I can't help. I wish I could. That picture has fascinated me for quite a while now. I think you're right about where the location is, since you have an address.

I used to think that maybe that location was somewhere on Fair Oaks south of Monterey Road, looking at those river rock banister thingies that the kids are standing on. In that area, there's a post-WWII-era apartment complex that was obviously built on what was once the lot of a grand old house or estate or something, obvious because of the old river rock staircase that still exists.

Here, take a looksy: https://www.google.com/maps/@34.1070...4!8i8192?hl=en

Nice!

I realize that as of this month, I've been living in South Pasadena for 20 years... and I feel I'm still learning about its history, and what used to stand where, etc. Thank you very much for that link.

I never would have guessed the window in the old weegee pic was facing an alley.

Now if only we knew someone who could superimpose the 1951 photo onto the side window of the building.

his initials are S and C. (that 'fade in' 'fade out' maneuver comes to mind)

I located another photo of weegee at the camera exchange.

icp.org UNKNOWN PHOTOGRAPHER c.1951

I wonder if they borrowed the "weegee" mannequin from a movie studio because it looks alot like Edgar G. Robinson.

psst, they spelled mannequins wrong. (unless Decter was just being clever) We'll never know.

Here's a bit of tangential information relating to the Marsh home in South Pasadena.

I wonder if they're employees.

Six months after this photo was taken the stock market crashed and the economy started its plunge into the Great Depression.

You're absolutely right CaliNative. I hadn't thought of that.

I wonder how the depression affected these girl's lives.

It certainly seems that it could be the same building...

Norman Leroy Marsh was born on May 24, 1902. His sister, Marion Elizabeth Marsh was born on August 7, 1906. They were the children of Norman Foote Marsh and his wife Cora Mae Cairns. Norman Foote Marsh was born on July 16, 1871 in Upper Alton, Illinois. Robert Marsh was born in Charleston, Ill. on January 20, 1873. They don't appear to be immediately related, at least for many generations. I can keep looking.

The cat does not look happy, but grown cats seldom are when being held by children.

Fannie Eliza Duvall appears in the 1900 census, stepdaughter of Eli Heazlet and his wife Flora. Fannie was born in September of 1861 in New York State and the 1900 Census lists her as an artist painting landscapes. They lived at 4537 Marmion Way. It appears that the house is still there but there may have been some re-numbering.
Googling her full name brings up some examples of her work. She went abroad in 1900, settling in Paris and studying with Whistler. A photo of her chrysanthemum painting can be found online.

That's EXACTLY what I meant Scott Charles.

Thank you so much. The window fits perfectly.

The same neon framed the front window as well so that was one spectacularly lit little corner.

I thought the edge of the gray wall in the foreground might cause you some trouble but I see that it didn't.

At first I didn't realize the 2nd pic of the chrysanthemums was Duvall's actual painting!

Thank you odinthor and oldstuff.

Here's a bit more information.

Independent Spirits

Fannie Eliza Duvall [c.1897]

I wonder if this painting ended up at San Juan Capistrano Mission?

Allow me to venture far away from Los Angeles for one brief moment.

I love that Duvall's chrysanthemum painting was displayed at the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (my favorite worlds fair by far)

The fair's Fine Arts Gallery is the only surviving building from the fair. Today it's known as the Museum of Science and Industry. < < < CLICK the link for GSV aerial view.

WeeGee in Los Angeles.

I bet he's on his way to Mickey Ward's L.A. Camera Exhange. ('Edgar G. Robinson' must be in the trunk)

My pleasure, ER!

For what it's worth, mannikin is an accepted spelling of the word:

Dictionary.com also lists the word mannikin.
