Retro tour continues-Olean, Elmira, Cortland, & Jamestown

Thought I'd go back in time again. Here's some smaller cities in upstate NY (the southern tier, mostly near the PA border). These pics are primarily from 2004.

Olean (pop ~ 15,000). St Bonaventure University is nearby.

Elmira (pop ~ 30,000, metro ~ 100,000) The city has had a tough time with many factories closing (my brother's included). Cost of living is low, but jobs are tough to come by.

Cortland (pop~19,000, part of Ithaca metro pop ~ 150,000) SUNY campus helps keep the city afloat as, again, most of the factories have left.

The building with the clock tower burned down - sad loss. But I believe construction has started for a replacement.

Jamestown is in the southwestern corner of upstate New York. It has a population of about 31,000 with about 140,000 in the metro.

Nice shooting of some of the smaller cities!! Yeah it does suck about the factories closing up. When they do, they usually don't ever get replaced!

I was just up in Cortland and Ithaca a couple of weeks ago. It is sad to see the dilapidated state of some of the places in that part of New York State. Even Ithaca, which has Cornell and Ithaca College and that beautiful Cayuga Lake, looks down at the heels. Maybe someday something will change this. Thanks for posting these. I love seeing smaller towns on here.

Nice tour of your area. I've been to Jamestown and Olean, but not Elmira and Cortland. I'll have to visit there some time soon.

I have made the pilgrimage, oh yes.

It's a half block between two warehouses with no addresses, but still... it's there!

Mark Twain is buried in Elmira. He married an Elmiran.

I always wondered what those cities were like, particularly Elmira.
