I don't know how to post pics, but here is a link to the new Renzo Piano designed criminal courts building in Paris. It kind of gives you the idea that maybe the step backed Northshore condo tower might have been a knock off?

This is another project stacked on top of a historic building. I like it!
That's pretty cool. Two stacked office projects on opposite sides of the street.

The one new piece of info there is that the tower portion of 504 E. 5th is 30-stories. In the separate Depot article Max/James says the source of that is the Houston developer Lynch, Allen Harrison Company. So this project is worthy of its own thread. But I don't have time to create it right now.

And we still seem to revert back to this 30 story plateau as all but one of of the buildings mentioned hovers at or close to 30. I swear that is like this city's happy place number or something lol.

Thanks for the visual Max! Those towers are going to radically change the Rainey Street area. Also, it should help tie that part of the skyline to (especially when WPP gets built) the rest of downtown.
I have always had the dream of both shores of town lake being flanked by hi rises. Sort of like Central Park in New York City. A silly notion I know, but one can dream...

With all that development around Rainey...what are the chances we see more of that street meet the same fate as the bungalows now replaced by the Millennium? Are there any efforts being brought about to protect what's left? Rainey has obviously become one of the main attractions downtown for its unique bar scene you can't find anywhere else...

We have a little more info about the current Block 36 project as of this morning. An update was added to the site plan this morning. It will be a five-story residential project with 263 units. The parking will be underground and the first floor is retail. The developer is Transwestern.

would so prefer Gensler's music venue, something that is needed and would really help connect Waller and Red River's music history further south towards the Rainey Street District.

Grounbreaking Celebration: Phase I of THe Laguna Gloria Master Plan

http://www.reedhilderbrand.com/works..._laguna_gloria

Quote:
FEBRUARY 16, 2018, AUSTIN, TEXAS – The Contemporary Austin announces that it has completed fundraising for Phase I of the Master Plan for its 14-acre lakeside Laguna Gloria site. Once the home of celebrated Texan Clara Driscoll, the enchanting grounds of Laguna Gloria feature a 100-year-old Italianate Villa, The Contemporary Austin Art School, and a bourgeoning sculpture park with more than twenty site-specific works by internationally acclaimed contemporary artists.
The initial stage of a multi-year project, Phase I will enhance the visitor experience at Laguna Gloria through architectural solutions that offer robust amenities presently unavailable at the site, including an arrival garden, retail space, outdoor café, and extended canopies providing shaded areas for guests. The new entrance will also incorporate works of art into the streetscape along West 35th Street, including a colorful sculptural installation by artist Jessica Stockholder.

Phase I of the Master Plan also includes a significant invasive species removal project in partnership with the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, as well as a partnership with the City of Austin Neighborhood Partnering Program to create sidewalks and improve parking along West 35th Street.

Groundbreaking on Phase I will take place on March 21, with construction expected to be complete in approximately one year. The Groundbreaking ceremony will begin at 10 am, is open to the public, and will include remarks by museum leadership and City of Austin officials.

^^ Very cool. Thanks for posting. Laguna Gloria and the Commodore Perry Estate are gems of this city. Great to see both of them getting attention and tasteful updates. I used to chase the peacocks at Laguna Gloria in the morning before school when I was a little boy.

As a personal aside, and I know the history of the place, but I've always thought that Hancock golf course (near the Commodore Perry Estate on Red River) would be better utilized and 'nicer' if they would reconfigure it to be an 18 hole par-3 course instead of the dumpy, short 9-hole course it is now. Technology and time have made the course/property too small for modern golf specifications. Par-3 golf is a great way for people to be introduced to golf and more people could play the course at any time. The Butler par-3 course on Riverside is always full and fun. I think Hancock needs to retire to similar use.

As long as they leave the Texas Sabal Palms alone (which are native) then I'll be happy. One of the best stands of Texas Sabal palms in the area.

Commissioners approved Tuesday the issuance of a request for proposal to construct a new home for civil and family litigation, estimated at about 435,000 square feet, the Austin Monitor reports.

They should build it on the southern half block bounded by 9th, Lavaca and Colorado that is behind the old federal building they were gifted. It is currently three parking garages with Enterprise, Cap Metro and Travis County. There is no CVC restriction so they could build a beautiful, tall, new building behind the old federal courthouse building. It would be two blocks from the current courthouse and other county building as well as close (compared to North Lamar) Congress Ave and other downtown law office clusters. Seems too obvious to ever happen.

It's looks as if the convention center reached out and attached itself to the Hilton.

This would be neat. I remember them saying there was some issues with them not being able to open it to the public because of fire safety concerns.

Panel recommends historic status for Mueller airport tower

By Ben Wear - American-Statesman Staff

The new zoning, supporters said at the commission meeting, would preserve the 84-foot tower “in perpetuity.”

Local historic zoning, along with possible state historical status (a process yet to begin) could make it easier to bypass certain building code requirements that would allow for public access to the 57-year-old tower at some point in the future.
It has nice views...
