The building itself is ok in my mind and would be pretty decent if they ditched the ball on top. What's really interesting is the plan to reclaim farmland which I assume would entail tearing down a ton of the housing pictured on the first page of this thread. I can't think of any precedents for doing such a thing but would imagine it something that might be of increasing importance in the future.

Wuxi is not that small a city, about 2.3 million according to Wikipedia. Amazingly, Dubai is also about that same size.

This is not in Wuxi city, but a village near it, in the countryside (and bear in mind Chinese countryside would pretty much count as suburban
anywhere else if it werent for the paddyfields).

They happen to be the richest 'farmers' in China, and the richest village. The area gets free housing for millions living around the riches of Shanghai,
money that must be spent by the socialist council - but these villagers differ for they also have vested business interests, including the skyrocketing
price of their land which most of them rent out.

'Countryside' and free villas for the farmers round nearby Hangzhou - the whole Yangte River Delta is carpeted by such development (check out the tilled
fields and dirt roads despite the 'urbanity').

The council however stipulates they must reside on that land to get their funds etc - so thus, what are in effect savvy millionnaires
(but were rural landowners a decade ago), have 'brought' the city to them, in the shape of their skyscraper. In other parts of China
where this has happened the newly rich move into the city and rent out from there, but here they are forced to reside on that land.
All around are no longer farmers houses but millionaire mansions.

Hmm. I think China may be heading toward taking a stab at an arcology. Building this huge skyscraper in the middle of nowhere just to house workers sounds like it's along those lines.

I thought the ball was an ornamental covering for a large tuned mass damper, like this one in the Taipei 101:

China is building some serious density in most of it's cities. Massive buildings like this are going to become more commonplace.

Wow that last picture of this tower completely changed my opinion of it. It actually looks pretty good. It reminds me of John Portman's clustered cylinder style of buildings from the 70's and 80's...
