My boss prefers Rae & Jerry's, while I prefer the Silver Heights Restaurant.

I've conceded that Rae & Jerry's is classier, has a better desert menu, better parking, better atmosphere, etc.

But the Longhorn Rib Steak at the Silver Heights is still easily the best steak.

In terms of non-top end steak, I've found the one at Earls to be decent. But yeah, I can see why The Keg is a hit... it's kind of in that sweet spot of providing a premium steak but at still reasonable prices.

There are numerous restaurants that have way better steak at the same price point, but they aren't specifically "Steakhouses." The Keg makes a decent steak, but everything else on the menu is horrible, and it's really overpriced. I'd agree of all the big chain places, Earls probably has the best steak – they've actually had the same butcher for 30 years, all their Canadian locations' steaks get cut by the same guy/team.

I for one though just never buy steaks in restaurants – way too overpriced and I can generally cook it better myself, and prefer a BBQ to a standard grill.

^ Steak definitely has its following but it seems less popular here than in the US... in everywhere but the coastal cities down there, it seems that steakhouses are the go-to places, while in Canada I'd say there is more of a preference for more complex dishes, including ethnic cuisines.

I mean, I enjoy a steak as much as the next guy but cooking a strip loin to medium rare doesn't exactly require Daniel Boulud skill levels.

The new Arabic Yefa Cafe on Portage in St. James is getting great reviews on Google and by the FP food critic. I'm going to give it a try in the next week or two.

Is Edo much different than Koya? It's funny because aside from the bowls, most of Koya's food has been way closer in style to Chinese-American than Japanese.

The big difference between Koya and Edo, is Edo cooks your order in front of you. unlike Koya has the food sitting in a steam tray waiting to be served

I guess it’s been awhile, but I always remembered Koya would cook the food in front of you on a flat top. I don’t remember steam trays...I know places like Manchu Wok uses steam trays for their food.

Am I wrong and going crazy?

Is it possible you're thinking of Palatal? Every Koya I've ever been to was pre-made.

FYI I still haven't heard what it's going to be but there is construction going on for the restaurant going in the Dayton building, where the 4Play entrance used to be.

I could be wrong too. Almost all the 'Asian' fast food places use steam trays. I know KimChi cooks the order for you.

There are still a few Koya's left in Winnipeg

Koya, Kim Chi, Thai Express, Edo and Palatal all cook the food when ordered.
Manchi Wok and Famous Wok had pre-cooked, steam trayed food.

Noticed that Kim Chi is opening next to the Manchu Wok. Usually on go to GC once a month, so I don't know how long that sign has been there. Last time I was there, the Tim Hortons was not.

Used to go to the Koya in Grant Park once a week for 4 years. Nothing was cooked to order.

Every Koya location ive been to has been cooked to order, the only exception is they use cooked chicken (maybe a food code?) that they add back to the grill and then slice it into eatable pieces. The beef and sea food has always been raw, as was the veggies they scoop out of the dispenser then steam. This includes GP location....for me that is.

Ate at Aurora on Corydon tonight. Best gnocchi I’ve ever had.....period. Great pizza and excellent service as well. Definitely support this restaurant. It’s one we’ll want to keep around for a while.
