Thanks, Bob! Still no word on increased transit funding or a new Interprovincial bridge to get trucks out of downtown, though. Priorities, priorities.
Highway 7 you are talking about? That is not maintained by the City of Ottawa.

No, I mean the 417 widening from Hwy 7 turnoff to something like Terry Fox.

Okay, something creepy is going on, and hear me out on it:

Yesterday (Thursday), never seen and never heard Ottawa Centre (Liberal) MPP Yasir Naqvi and Jim Watson make an unusually large announcement that Naqvi's bill would allow Ottawa to collect red light fine money from Quebec motorists. It amounts to like $300,000 a year. Fine, but huge announcement.

Today, first thing in the morning, never seen or heard except at election time Ottawa West-Nepean (Liberal) MPP Bob Chiarelli, who twice announced a total of $286 million for suburban 417 widening (east and west) in the lead-up to the 2011 election (see above) to relieve "congestion" announces, basically, that Ottawa residents are getting their gas tax back.
HUGE announcement, at a transit station, with Jim Watson. $36 million in gas tax PAID BY OTTAWA residents is coming back to the city. Like it does every friggin year. Like there used to be a different set-up. Only now, because of more drivers and pricier gas, it's $4M more than last year.

The announcement follows: This will be good for transit, and Bob states "Transit is essential to alleviate congestion."

A complete non-announcement. Like announcing your property taxes pay for garbage pickup.

It's still being announced on the radio and TV news. Bob and Jim standing together, saying how our own taxes will help us. The money's really rolling in, they say. A year after a quarter billion spent by the province on pre-election suburban highway widening and not a cent for transit, while the Liberals asked the GTA "How high?" in response to their "Jump".

Thursday and Friday - two HUGE non-announcements regarding basic revenue streams and applauding two never seen or heard except at election time Liberal MPP's.
On Monday, the sleaze at Queen's Park reaches a boil and the Liberals (long past due) start really getting raked through the mud for their financial retardation and moral bankruptcy. Energy Minister Bentley to appear before contempt proceedings. Blowing close to a billion (after associated costs factored in) for buying 2,4,5 GTA seats with everyone else's cash by c ancelling already under construction power plants.

OK, all that said, is anyone else creeped out that Jim Watsin is essentially acting as a de-facto McGuinty Liberal MPP and holding non-events to make his absentee area Liberal MPP's look good? Essentially, trying to hose some of the mud off and electioneer them a bit for the (possible) coming election?

I think it's blatant, as I follow the news closely. And it grosses me out.

As far as Eagleson. Still, that is not maintained or operated by the City of Ottawa so they don't have control over it.

Main Street Renewal

Open House
Wednesday, October 17, 2012
6:00 to 9:00 p.m.
Saint Paul University
Guigues Hall, Atrium
223 Main Street, Ottawa
Notice of Project Commencement
Functional, Preliminary and Detailed Design:

Main Street (Echo Drive to the Rideau River),
Lees Avenue (Main Street to Chestnut Street), and
Rideau River Drive (Main Street to 130m south of Main Street)
Project Description

The City of Ottawa is undertaking the Functional, Preliminary and Detailed Design for the renewal of Main Street and portions of Lees Avenue and Rideau River Drive. Specifically, the works proposed include the introduction, rehabilitation and/or replacement of:

Sidewalks, cycling facilities, and transit facilities;
Opportunities for street amenities including landscaping and public art;
Street lighting and signage;
Watermains, sanitary, storm and combined sewers;
Opportunities to reduce extraneous stormwater flows from adjacent flat roof buildings;
Lateral services to the property line;
Utility reconstruction as required;
Traffic control signal system; and
Road structure and pavement.
The existing street infrastructure has reached the end of its life-cycle, and the City has identified the need for reconstruction. Main Street and Lees Avenue are each designated as an Arterial Road in the City of Ottawa Official Plan. Main Street from Echo Drive to Clegg Street is also designated as a Traditional Mainstreet. Rideau River Drive is a Local Street. Accordingly, the project designs will have regard for the streets' various planned functions and within various community contexts within the project limits.

Main St. Renewal Key Plan Map

Project Result and Timing

The project will result in the preparation and approval of detailed designs for the reconstruction of the streets. This includes the layout of the surface elements including sidewalk, cycling, transit and vehicle provisions, street lighting and streetscape improvements, and solutions for below-ground infrastructure. Methods to manage traffic and disruption during the construction period will also be recommended. It is anticipated that the designs will be completed by the end of 2013. Construction will occur in accordance with the City's capital planning decisions.

Project description
Intersection modification will provide: dual northbound and southbound left turn lanes on Moodie Drive. at intersection with Robertson Road; an extended eastbound right turn lane/curb side transit storage length; westbound proper width approach storage and extended westbound acceleration lane; eastbound and westbound bike/bus pocket at the intersection. It will also provide a southbound and northbound bicycle lane throughout the project limits; an eastbound and a westbound bicycle lane throughout the project and a new concrete sidewalk throughout the project.

Holland Avenue at Carling Avenue
This project consists of improvements to pedestrian safety and accessibility/mobility including new curbs and ramps, additional sidewalk near transit stop (southeast corner), enhanced crosswalk pavement markings, realigned crosswalks, pedestrian countdown signals and audible signals.

The intersection of Carling Avenue and Holland Avenue was selected by Councillors and residents as one with significant safety risks and concerns for pedestrians, and is one of the first to be reviewed and improved as part of the new Pedestrian Safety Evaluation Program pilot project.

Regarding the Hunt Club southwest section:

* I strongly prefer the Richmond/Hunt Club widening as opposed to a new corridor, due to impacts of such a wide ROW on NCC land, which for the most part is very environmentally sensitive.

* Several houses would need to be expropriated in stage 1 and more would need to be in the ultimate stage.

* In Stage 1, the number of access points would be limited between Eagleson and Cedarview. In Stage 2, it would be fully controlled access.

* Existing Hope Side Road would remain as a service road in its current configuration with full access to residential communities.

* Is protection possible for a new alignment on the south and west sides of Stittsville out towards Highway 7? Such would likely only need to be 2 lanes initially.

...
It wasn't very long ago that the City dug up the intersection of Robertson and Moodie to lay a sewer under Moodie. Good to see that things are so well coordinated at the City.

If the purpose of connecting the Hope Side Road to West Hunt Club Road is to provide an easterly path across the Rideau River and/or a connection to the 416, I would rather the City used Strandherd Road. It should be fairly easy to extend the Hope Side Road south-east through the old quarry and connect it to the current Fallowfield/Strandherd interchange with the 416. Fallowfield would be chopped and connected with a 'T' intersection to the new Hope Side Road extension. If people really want to get onto Hunt Club, they can get on the 416 at Strandherd and get off at West Hunt Club, one interchange north.

By taking the traffic up Richmond Road, it travels through the heart of the Stoney Swamp. The original convoluted routing of the planned Hope Side Road extension was due to the NCC saying that there would be NO widening of Richmond Road through the swamp. I guess that by limiting the study's scope to only looking at a connection to Hunt Club and presenting an option which is much worse, the City has stunned the NCC into agreeing to allow the widening of Richmond Road. In my opinion, this is a big mistake.

The old quarry does provide an option too, but land stability for what would be a crucial transportation corridor would be a major issue.

November 29, 2012 10:00 amMinistry of Transportation
Ontario has finished widening Highway 417 from Regional Road 29 to Division Street through the Town of Arnprior, creating 700 jobs.

The project will make travel easier and safer for families and businesses. The section of highway now features:

5.6 km of new four-lane highway
A new interchange at White Lake Road
Two new overpasses at Baskin Drive and Division Street
Two new bridge crossings for the new westbound lanes at the CPR crossing and the Madawaska River Bridge
Repairs to the Madawaska River and CPR crossing bridges
Improving Ontario's transportation network is part of the McGuinty government's plan to strengthen the economy. A strong economy protects the services that mean the most to Ontario families - health care and education.

Now it's time to begin working to Renfrew on it!

You might have thought that they would have at least extended it to the 3/4 lane section west of Campbell Drive and east of Scheel Drive.

Morons... because of Provincial inaction, amongst other things, there is no CPR crossing anymore.

When they extend it to Renfrew they'll probably just pave right over the old CPR line on the level and knock down the existing overpass (if they're generous they might provide a low-level underpass like they did for Hwy 7).

In Ottawa now - starting with Orleans

Trim rd south of Innes. Note construction had not started yet between St. Joseph and Innes at the time

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...12,128.86,,0,0

Brian Coburn Blvd which now connects to Trim Road. Speed limit on the entire stretch is 60 km/h

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...=12,93.17,,0,0

West of Tenth Line

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...272.49,,0,8.15

At Mer Bleue. At that time, it was not opened yet, but I think it was just a couple of months there. This is where the future Hospital in Orleans will be built

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...2,74.4,,0,3.99

Portobello Blvd was also widened south of Innes. South of Brian Coburn, it is two lanes, but that segment was built not long ago. Speed limit is still at 50 km/h

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...12,212.49,,0,0

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...184.92,,0,5.61

Tenth Line much like Trim and Portobello was also widened south of Innes to about Brian Coburn Blvd. Seems the entire stretch to near Navan is now 60 km/h. Though parts south of Innes used to be 80 km/h.

In Riverside South/Barrhaven

Limebank/Earl Armstrong intersection, both roads at that point have 80 km/h speed limits and this is where it narrows to 2 lanes

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...38.91,,0,-7.73

The Leitrim and Limebank intersection was also reconfigured during the construction

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...305.95,,0,6.63

Earl Armstrong at River with the Strandherd Bridge under construction in the background. Speed limit is at 70 km/h until near Spratt.

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...12,294.44,,0,0

On the other side of the bridge on Strandherd. Seems the entire stretch from Greenbank to Prince of Wales is 70 km/h, which probably means the speed on the bridge will be 70 as well. Notice not long ago 70 km/h wasn't a popular speed limit in the city, now a lot of newer arteries have that speed of limit. Barrhaven, is clearly an indication.

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...04.87,,0,-5.86

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...=12,75.33,,0,0

Longfield east of Woodroffe - speed is at 70 km/h

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...cbp=12,45,,0,0

Longfields south of Strandherd, speed limit is 60-70 km/h.

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...,162.54,,2,2.4

Longfields/Jockvale intersection. Speed limit on Jockvale from Greenbank to Cambrian is now 60 km/h.

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...336.59,,1,5.57

Finally in Kanata/Stittsville

The new Terry Fox extension. Entire stretch of the newer road is no surprise 80 km/h. Though between Second Line and March it is 60 km/h

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...12,231.33,,1,0

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...&cbp=12,0,,0,0

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...141.87,,0,3.23

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...97.78,,0,15.98

A short section of March Road was also twinned north of Morgan's Grant to Klondike and Halton Terrace/Maxwell Bridge

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...18.65,,0,-1.44

Hazeldean Road. The speed limit appeared to have dropped to 60 km/h all the way to Carp Road.

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...12,232.81,,0,0

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...cbp=12,45,,0,0

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...12,243.99,,0,0

And last but not least Hwy 417 west of the 416

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...235.75,,0,-1.7

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...74.81,,0,-3.91

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...cbp=12,90,,0,0

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...12,292.05,,0,0

And forgot Hwy 7 west of Ottawa

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...=12,88.85,,0,0

https://maps.google.ca/maps?hl=en&ll...63.38,,0,-3.14
