Walked by just now (sorry again for my horrible camera phone w/ purple spots!). The Temple is moving right along. The parking lot is still half open, and too many construction trailers to count on the closed lot... huge undertaking really.

The tower needs to start construction now! In the meantime, the Temple is looking really great.

I am curious to see how the highly polished white granite cladding will look once they start putting it on the Temple.

Is that's what's happening? I was a little worried when I saw the oval windows sculpted out that they'd simply be painting the concrete white. That'll be awesome if it's clad in something better.

I jogged by yesterday and thought "SURRENDER DOROTHY!"

The white granite should be more brilliant and reflect light more than any white marble. The white marble on the Ritz(Girard Bank) is from the state of Georgia and is as dense as marble gets so it is very bright in sun light, particularly right after the restoration in 2000. City Hall is clad in a white marble from the state of MA and is somewhat course and collects dirt over time. If you are old enough you might remember it was almost black from soot from trains in the first half of the 20th c.

Granite is an igneous rock and was once molten so it is as dense as rock gets. Marble started out as limestone( a sedimentary rock) was then put under high heat and pressure causing the calcite in the limestone to recrystallize into larger crystal structures so it doesn't have the density of granite.

So what you see now, i.e., the grey concrete, will be transformed utterly.

Granite or not, the dome of the Ritz currently looks horrible and dirty (though not quite as bad as City Hall used to). Not very white...Needs a good powerwashing. Or whatever it is they do. I'm sure it's expensive to clean properly. Every 15 years or so would be good. They are due.

LOL, when I lived in DC the tag was always there. Now, occasionally someone tags it and then it's gone. But it's nice to see it lives on.

It's funny, I moved to Philly over ten years ago when they were cleaning City Hall, and I remember some lifelong residents telling me they had always thought that it was made of granite because it was so dark. It wasn't until they finally started cleaning it in the early 00's that a lot of people realize it was marble.

TallCoolOne, awesome pics man! Nice job of capturing the building site. The sunburst pic was really nice. Good camera.

I was going to post same thing about the parking lot. Just went past there and noticed it was closed. could this be yet another project that beats W hotel into construction? Seems that way.

I think so - without a doubt. Financing here was never an issue -- Mormons...deeeep pockets.

Love it! They already did soil samples, so I'm going to assume this is test boring.

What am I looking at here? Is this a mockup of part of the tower or of the temple?
