No date yet: IKEA Halifax offers update on construction, can't confirm opening day

The outside of the site is looking nearly finished, but the store manager says there's plenty of construction and designing left to do inside.

Landscaping is nearly done, furniture is being shipped in over the next few weeks, but there’s still no official opening date for IKEA Halifax.

Sue Coulet, store manager for the new IKEA in Dartmouth Crossing, said in an interview she’s happy things are “on track” but couldn’t give a date just yet. The company has previously said they are aiming for this fall.

Popular local business site Halifax ReTales said on social media this week they’ve heard the unofficial target date is Sept.22, but Coulet could not confirm that.

“Our construction is really a moving target … we’re just not at the point yet where can actually announce it,” Coulet said Tuesday.

Right now IKEA staff are in the location getting the racking up in the market hall and other areas, building up the inspirational room settings specific to Atlantic Canada, Coulet said, and are expected more than 700 trailers of product to be delivered before the grand opening.

The furniture displays are arriving this week, but things like the showrooms are still very much in the construction phase, Coulet said.

However, Coulet said the outside of the store is “looking great” since the landscaping of grass and trees is nearly complete, while the parking lot should be paved this week.

The store is still hiring for 100 positions in sales, IKEA food, logistics, cash and carts, Coulet said, complete their staff of roughly 300 with half being full-time positions.

The new IKEA is expected to be roughly 330,000 square feet, which is about the same size as four football fields.

Nice. I work in logistics for a far more reasonably sized retailer. 700 trailers represents between 15,000 and 21,000 pallets of goods!

Parking lot and access road are paved. There is a sidewalk up to this site as well though it needs some landscaping done.

I would avoid opening day.

I may avoid the store entirely given the mega-size of the place.

IKEA stores tend to be madhouses. They are large, busy, and intentionally designed to be maze-like. Even if you want one small thing it can take you half an hour to get in and out. They are one step worse than the mega-sized Superstores.

They have a lot of lower quality stuff, but its value for dollar is often excellent. If you're a renter and you need to furnish a place you'll only be in for a few years it is great. It's also good in that it has just about everything, and most of the items are reasonable. You can furnish a whole house there in one trip (then take your time to buy nicer stuff as the IKEA items fall apart in 5-10 years).

If we develop our public transit... Halifax will be somewhere between NA and Europe.

Small steps closer to an international city. A stadium should be a big priority for the city. Its an essential part of every European city and Halifax should strive to go in this direction.

Well we are going to beat the State of Indiana (and it's nearly 7 million people), it's opening it's first IKEA two weeks after us, and it's 41,000 sqft smalller than IKEA Halifax.

Maybe. They've pulled back a bit on timing. Those links to IKEA's Halifax page now only say Halifax Opening Soon. And the contest info and dates are gone. I heard from a reliable source that they are going to have a hard time hitting the Sept.27 date. Not saying it won't happen, but they seem to be hedging their bets now.

I have a feeling they quickly removed the contest details as they did not mean to have their projected opening date released to the public yet. IKEA wants to announce their opening date through a press release/event.

IKEA Halifax will welcome its first customers following grand opening celebrations
Burlington, ON – Today, IKEA Canada announces that it will open the much anticipated IKEA Halifax store on Wednesday, September 27th, 2017. Grand opening celebrations will begin at 8:20 am on September 27th and the store will welcome its first customers through the doors at 9:00 am.

“We’re so excited to welcome our first customers to our brand new IKEA Halifax store,” said IKEA Halifax Store Manager Sue Coulet. “We invite local and surrounding area residents to join in the excitement and experience the store for themselves. Opening celebrations will feature fun family entertainment and great giveaways.”

More information about grand opening plans, including customer offers and promotions will be available soon. IKEA Halifax regular store hours will be weekdays from 10 am to 9 pm, from 9:30 am to 9 pm on Saturdays and from 10 am to 6 pm on Sundays.

The 330,000 square foot store will include a huge Showroom and Market hall, filled with inspiration, ideas and beautiful home furnishing products. IKEA Halifax will also have a full Restaurant, a SMALAND children’s play facility. It will also offer customers a complete range of convenient services such as home delivery, assembly, planning and returns.

“I’m thrilled that half of the jobs at IKEA Halifax are full-time and part-time co-workers will receive guaranteed hours each week,” said IKEA Canada President Marsha Smith. “Working at IKEA is inspiring, fun and fast-paced. Career opportunities are endless and we take great pride in giving our co-workers the opportunity for professional growth and development.”

In addition to the exceptional career and learning possibilities, all co-workers will have access to IKEA Canada’s Total Rewards package, which includes a bonus program, subsidized meals, and contributions to co-workers’ retirement savings programs.

IKEA Halifax is the first new store to open as part of IKEA Canada’s ambitious plan to double the number of stores by 2025 and expand from coast to coast. The retailer also launched 14 Collection Points since August 2016, nine of which are located in Atlantic Canada. IKEA Canada also has plans to open a new store in Quebec City in late summer 2018.
