In Sicilia! Walking the Streets of Palermo

The vacation I dreamed of for what seemed like an eternity started off rough. Obsessed with genealogy, I've longed to desired to see the place from which my great-grandparents were born. A very late flight; a lost hotel reservation; an extreme amount of sleep deprivation from partying with a bunch of Brazilians in London the night before (totally worth it, by the way); hell, the whole island was covered in a nasty, windy storm upon my arrival. But... Here I was. Recently applying for Italian citizenship, this trip was not only about learning more of my roots, but also to learn the culture and language of a country I could be calling home later this year. First cultural lesson: Gotta get some food!

Thanks for sharing, love the Mediterranean feeling and the priceless Italian classic architecture.

Little known fact: the Americans first and the French second are the biggest fans of pizza in the world, while Italy provides the tastiest I've ever eaten.

You'll be amazed and proud of your origins if you tour the country, it's amazingly pretty and picturesque, with tons of unique medieval and Renaissance sites, enjoying a warm Mediterranean weather. It would be perfect without the mafia businesses in the south.

Nice! It seems like Palermo is somewhat off the tourist radar (at least compared to better-known destinations), which makes it especially interesting to me.

Yeah, that's where my family came from. You know it's going to be interesting when a distant cousin tells you which people to avoid.

Agreed. It's actually a relief to be in a big city and not being surrounded by tourists (summer could be different though).

Solid tour. I'd love to get over there one day. Are the photos small by choice or did you fall victim to quickrpickr getting rid of the large size?

Thanks! I'll look into making them bigger. This is the first photo thread I've done on a message board in a long time.

Yeah, I'm jealous, but thanks for showing me a place I'm sure I'll never see in person. (Looks like a hell of a lot of fun)

Don't you love your cubicle?!

In picture 52, is that a snow covered mountain range in the background, or is it just clouds? If it's mountains, what mountains are they?

I saw the mountains too, and was intrigued. They have snow down there? Or is that on the mainland/continental Italy?
