been twice, what a beautiful place and to the poster above, that little city is in i think the top twenty in the US as a container port activity or tonnage, something like that. When you are on the bluff along the river the height of containers on the ships going by is eye level, amazing. So much fun along the river too with the restaurants and bars. What a fabulous city with amazing southern charm, i love it here sorry, but yeah, i'm one of those tourists

yes, it would have been tragic if the division of the mississippi had leveled savannah. it would have rebuilt but wouldnt have been the same.

While these two cities are often grouped into a single package, I really don't find them to be all that similar. They both really do stand on their own -- entirely different identities, different histories, different people, foods, colors, moods. It is wonderful they are so close together, and so unique.

I agree 100% with you. I've been to both and while i really liked Charleston, it doesn't hold a candle to Savannah, IMO

Having lived here the past three years I will say this, Savannah is weird. If you are not from here you will never feel totally at ease. The Southern Blue Bloods have their own circles and nobody is let in. Even other Southerners who move here never can get into society so to speak. Between tourists, artsy SCAD students, TONS of military (Paris Island and Beaufort SC to the north, Hunter AAF with Ranger Battalion IN Savannah, Ft. Stewart home of the 3rd Infantry Division not to mention Coast Guard and Navy constantly around) and all of the Vets who stick around (biker gangs) its just plain weird. That being said it is very pretty. I just cannot wrap my head around it. Ive lived in Cleveland, Columbus, Boston, New York so I have some comparison.

P.S. because of all the military (recent war trophies etc) and wealthy retirees/locals the pawn shops and antiquing is top notch.
