That's a foreign map/graphic. It's no more appropriate than posting land use maps for Vietnam, Uttar Pradesh, The Horn of Africa, Flanders, etc.

Considering Timbuktu is a city, a land use map of it would be very boring. How about a land use map of Mali.

It's one of the countries involved in the Great Green Wall project. An attempt to create a buffer of natural vegetation along the Southern Sahara in order to curb the desertifcation and environmental degradation of the continent's poorest areas.

Agreed. Also, a map that reflects North American urbanism trends is almost certainly of some relevance from a Canadian standpoint.

I recommend that you click on the link. A revealing look at the land-use of America which I would assume would be very similar in Canada as well.

I don't know how much it would. The suburban sprawl is on another level in the states. Where cities in Canada end, farmland usually begins; in the states, you're more likely to encounter spaced out houses on massive tracts of land.

I have been to southern Mali. It is a very very dry open forest with a sharp wet season.

Closest comparison I can think of regarding forest density / form would be where Ponderosa Pine forests give way to grasslands. (Just trade out the pines with broadleaf trees).

I thought that cannabis in South Africa had been decriminalized by the courts, not legalized.

From a quick perusal of the article, South Africa and Georgia (one of the other blue countries) have legalized possession and consumption, but don't have an actual resale system.

Uruguay, the other entirely blue country is entirely legal, but apparently foreigners cannot buy.

Netherland has to abide by EU rules which are pretty specific regarding drug policy. So officially it’s not legal but unofficially nobody cares.
