the homicide numbers i posted for chicago include all homicides that occurred within the 227 square mile jurisdiction of the city of chicago police department.

they include ALL homicides - shootings, stabbings, beating deaths, poisonings, etc. they do not include suicides because suicide is a different category apart from homicide.

Murder is horrible no matter what/who/why/how but everytime Chicago is on the news, the reporters are always quick to say its attributed to gang violence.

So are Chicago numbers also including everything else like LAs numbers ? or just gang violence ? because LAs numbers, when based on gang violence only, are actually a whole lot lower like pushing towards 200 if not lower. LA crime stats were merged as one a few years ago so that gang violence is included with with everything else.

200 isnt bad from a peak of 2,600 of pure gang violence in 93, a number that fluctuated between 1,500-2,600 yearly for almost 2 decades between the 80s and early 2000s.
Does LAPD break down homicides by the victims ethnicity?

I’m curious what last year was.
Portland has increased somewhat this year. I think last year had 16 murders and a few more justified homicides. Portland currently has 19 murders, after what looks like a suicide pact between a pair of runaways:

Missing Aloha teen killed in murder suicide, police say

Over the past decade, the number of murders per year has wavered between the mid-teens and the high-20's. The number right now seems bolstered by murders (in particular, stabbings) between members of the city's large homeless population, or murders of non-homeless BY the homeless. There are a lot more nonfatal stabbings than murders, but enough of them turn into murders to keep the numbers from dropping.

Columbus is at 114 as of today, and I believe Indianapolis has hit 130(they were at 126th on the tenth and I think they have had four more since then, 3 in the last day).

I'm not really sure. But apparently it shows names and faces so you can kinda guesstimate what's going on.

we just had rare weekend in chicago with no homicides recorded.

here's hoping that the onset of colder weather can keep us under 700 for the year.

through 11/19:

total homicides:

2016: 714
2017: 616

down 13.7%

total people shot (wounded & killed):

2016: 3,875
2017: 3,274

down 15.5%

san francisco has 52 homicides to date.
oakland has 63 homicides to date
san jose has 25 homicides to date.

extrapolated for the year, that's 59 for san francisco, 71 for oakland, 28 for san jose.

1/14,813 residents in SF, 1/6,000 residents in oakland.

some context:

san jose 2017 (est) 1/37,400
new york 2016 1/25,562
san francisco 2017 (est) 1/14,800
oakland 2017 (est) 1/6,000
chicago 2016 1/3,550
new york city 1990 1/3,236

Columbus up to 118.

Good to see another city like Chicago having a better(not great)but still better year-heading in the right direction at least.

Boise is at 1, after finishing with 6 last year.

If it holds, it'll be the 5th time since 2008 that Boise has finished with 1.

Any reason why these two figures are so far apart?
