4 out of the 6 I outlined can safely be said they are abandoned. The only one I know of that anything is being done to it is that white one in the back. They are trying to allocate funds to remove the ugly 1960s cladding and restore that building to its original state. Theyve already taken some of the cladding off to see the shape the old facade is in below it. Its right across from MainPlace and has been vacant for decades.
I didn't know about those other buildings downtown, but there were some others - notable south/west of downtown that looked like high rise hotels which were clearly abandoned. . . do you have any info on those?

Possibly the most expensive uncompleted building in the U.S., the topped out and cladded Fontainebleau resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. $2 billion was already spent before construction stopped and another $1.5 billion is needed to finish it. Carl Icon bought it out of bankruptcy last year for $156 million and is just sitting on it. He spent a little to preserve it and is waiting out the Great Recession before making any decision on what to do with it.
In October 2010, owner, Carl Icahn auctioned off the furnishings intended for the building. Observers are taking that as a sign he has no plans to complete the resort.

I actually found more information on the Fontainebleau Resort Las Vegas. It was supposed to have 3,889 rooms, and all for hotels, condominiums, and casinos. It has a total of 68 floors, and it would have had incorporated spas, a performing arts theater, retail, indoor/outdoor conferencing, nightclubs, and restaurants/lounges. The building has been topped out, but the new owner Carl Icahn can afford the $1.5 billion dollars to finish the project, and that is why he sold out all the furniture.
Yeah doesn't it sound familiar to you?. Supposed to be incorporated for hotel use, but it isn't completed?. That building sits in the most isolated country in Asia. In a capital city where few people would want to go to, but Molson figured it out already so there is no use there.
The highrise on the right (Fireman's Insurance Building) has been empty for decades, but looks like it's getting some work done here (May 2008).
The old Jersey City Medical Center complex is easily the most badass/creepy set of abandoned high-rises I'd ever seen. Fortunately they are currently being rehabbed into condos. These pics are from August 2000 when the entire complex was abandoned and had windows smashed out up to the 13th floor. It was built during the depression, pushed through by super-corrupt mayor Frank Hague, and was far too large, even in Jersey City's heyday.
Nobody knows about this place. It's amazing the obscurity that comes with being on the New Jersey side of the river. If these towers were in Brooklyn, they'd be legendary. I count them among my very favorite buildings anywhere.
This mammoth complex is far from downtown, so it really looms menacingly over the surrounding low-rise neighborhood. They are being renovated into luxury condos, although I'm note sure if they're selling or not. It's a pretty dicey area and kind of far from the Journal Square subway. I'm glad they were saved, though.
Not a skyscraper or abandoned by any means (developers are adding 200,000m^2 of additional space), but the New South China Mall is an unbelievably huge and empty structure that opened in 2005 and has been 99% vacant ever since. It is also the world's largest mall by total leasable area.
DC of course doesn't have skyscrapers but it has a surprising number of vacant properties, many in prime locations. They're due to a number of different factors, from developers who are sitting on them, to batshit crazy owners who's schemes are being met with a lot of opposition and stalled by the HPRB or BZA (and won't sell), and of course absentee owners. We have a "demolition by neglect" code and a vacant properties tax, but owners often manage to loophole through that. Seeing a nice old building deteriorate is sometimes sadder than just seeing it razed.

There have been talks about retrofitting the Sterick Building, but supposedly its too expensive to fix up and too expensive to tear down, but I'm not sure if that's completely true. However, it is one of Memphis' top 10 buildings to save so hopefully something will be done.

I had no idea that building in Memphis was abandoned, its such a beauty and 410 grand for the whole building? Sounds like a sweet deal although it would probably cost 50 million to restore it and turn it into apartments.

Yeah, I was surprised at that price too. I guess the fact that it would probably cost around 50 million if not more is whats keeping most developers away.
